Sometimes I shave my legs and sometimes I don’t
Sometimes I comb my hair and sometimes I won’t
Depend of how the wind blows I might even paint my toes
It really just depends on whatever feels good in my soul
I’m not the average girl from your video
And I ain’t built like a supermodel
But I learned to love myself unconditionally,
Because I am a queen
I not the average girl from your video
My worth is not determined by the price of my clothes
No matter what I’m wearing I will always be
When I look in the mirror and the only one there is me
Every freckle on my face is where it’s suppose to be
And I know my creator didn’t make no mistakes on me
My feet, my thighs, my Lips, my eyes, I’m loving what I see
Am I less of a lady if I don’t where panty hose
My momma said a lady ain’t what she wears but what she knows…
But I’ve drawn the conclusion, it’s all an illusion
Confusion’s the name of the game
A misconception, a vast deception,
Something got to change
Now don’t be offended this is all my opinion
Ain’t nothing that I’m saying law
This is a true confession
Of a life learned lesson
I was sent here to share with y'all
So get in when you fit in
Go on and shine
Clear your mind
Now’s the time
Put your salt on the shelf
Go on and love yourself
‘Cause everything’s gonna be alright
Keep your fancy drink, and your expensive minks
I don’t need that to have a good time
Keep your expensive cars and your caviar
All’s I need is my guitar
Keep your crystal and your pistol
I’d rather have a pretty piece of crystal
Don’t need you silicone, I prefer my own
What god gave me is just fine…
What does the song title mean, and how
does it relate to the song lyrics?
Society bases their thoughts on "beautiful" women in the media, including videos.
If you could come up with an alternate title for this song, what would it be? Why?
We came up with the title "I'm Just Being Me" because India Arie compares herself to other beautiful women, but also shows that she, herself, is beautiful, but in a different kind of way.
What is the songwriter trying to tell you? What do you think they were feeling when they wrote this song?
India is trying to tell us that we don't have to look like a supermodel in order to be beautiful and that our worth is not determined by how expensive our clothes. We think she was very confident when she wrote this song because she clearly states that, regardless, she is beautiful.
Do you agree or disagree with what they're saying? Why?
We agree with India because many girls believe that you have look a certain way and have certain things in order to be beautiful.
How did this song make you feel? Did you feel that it was expressing feelings that are similar to your own?
This song made us feel happy and joyful because India Arie basically told us that everyone is beautiful and that we are unique in every way possible
The singer is content to be herself because she loves the way she is and ignores all her flaws because everyone has them. India Arie accepts herself so she is happy with who she is.
Explain all the reasons that this singer is content to be herself.
What are the characteristics of a person that society thinks are "normal" based on this song?
The characteristics of a person that society thinks is "normal" is to have luxury items such as expensive cars, or nice clothing. Society doesn't went to be true to ourselves. Society wants us to be "perfect".
Do you think that this singer portrays a Christian view of body image? Why or why not?
Yes, we do think that India Arie portrayed a Christian view of body image because in her song India shows that she is beautiful no matter what she looks like. That is the Christian view of body image, loving and accepting yourself.
What do you think is the difference between how society and celebrities view body image and how a Christina person views body image?
The difference between how society and celebrities view body image and how a Christian person views body is that society and celebrities see that there is only one image that everyone should have while a Christian person sees that there are many different images that are all unique.
Do you think that celebrities always like the way they look and feel about themselves?
No, we do not think that celebrities always like the way they look and feel about themselves. They are like every other person in the world and they also have insecurities which make them down on themselves.
We wanted to create a visually appealing yet thought invoking design for our presentation. We're sure you
all noticed the pictures we used here, but what do they
mean? In our song, the singer speaks about breaking away from a mold and we wanted you to understand
the stereotypes she was talking about before we began.
The silhouette shown above helps support the idea that
in our society, many girls feel the need to fit in, and this
is often through appearance- one specific appearance.
However, this is not what God intended. We are all made
different. The thought bubbles communicate that as much as it takes much mental effort, we need to remember we are beautiful the way we are today.
