Transcript of Pollution in the UAE

Pollution in the UAE Did You Know? ecological footprint Did You Know? Did You Know? The impact of a person or community on the environment, expressed as the amount of land required to sustain their use of natural resources (New Oxford American Dictionary, 2010). Huda Marwa Rima We can end the History of pollution in the UAE Air Pollution Light pollution Plastic pollution Most common types of pollution in the UAE If we look back at the life of our ancestors, we will definitely notice that there was a huge difference between life back then and now. Their life was so simple compared to how our life is today. Examples on the lifestyle that our grandparents led include:

-Back then only few people owned cars since everything was done on foot which meant that traffic pollution was not as common as it is nowadays.

-There wasn't a lot of factories which meant that the air was much purer than it is now. Consequently, the weather was much colder.

-Electricity, Air conditioners, mobile phones, laptops, televisions, were not available back then, so the usage of energy resources was very limited. Therefore energy pollution did not exist. (Srinivasamurthy, 2012) The Problem

non-biodegradable Solutions

preventing unsuitable disposal
limiting the use of plastic
using biodegradable plastics The problem Solutions ("UAE in the past," 2002) what is light pollution? In the UAE:

50% of camels die by swallowing plastic bags debris.
More than 100,000 marine animals die each year by mistaking plastic bags for food. Did you know? Almost 850 people in the UAE die each year because of air pollution (Todorova, 2009). Do you guys ever wonder what we're actually breathing everyday? (“Plastic pollution”,2009) We breathe in a bunch of pollutants that have been released by: Buses Cars Cigarettes Other polluters The problem There are two types of air pollution Indoor air pollution Outdoor air pollution ("World's most polluted countries",n.d.) ("World's most polluted countries",n.d.) ("World's most polluted countries",n.d.) Did you also know that the UAE was the 7th
most polluted country in the world in 2011 ("World's most polluted countries",n.d.) ("UAE in the past," 2002) ("UAE in the past," 2002) ("UAE in the past," 2002) ("UAE in the past," 2002) ("UAE in the past," 2002) There has been a great number of researches on creating biodegradable plastics. One of them developed a type of plastic that has a good property and is completely biodegradable. In addition to that, it can be adjusted and easily recycled. It is useful becuase it can be used in agriculture, goods and packaging (Jogdand, 2010). Biodegradable Plastics 20 billion (Dahl, 2010) (Fallabrino, 2009) Outdoor air pollution is more common in UAE that indoor air pollution is. The growth and development of the UAE in the past twenty years has led to the rise in the usage of cars, trucks, ships, and other means of transportation. In addition to the increase in the number of factories meaning there has been a rise in industrial activities as well (Al Jassmi, n.d.). ("Plastic waste endangers wildlife",2010) Light pollution is defined as unnatural light that brightens, or trespasses places that are not supposed to be illuminated (Klinkenborg, 2008). It is a fact that “Most city skies have become virtually empty of stars” (Klinkenborg, 2008, para. 1) The problem is that we don't properly consume light, for example, outdoor lighting is used to improve visual clarity at night, but if the light does not come where it is required, then it's wasted. Consequently, that causes economic and environmental damages in addition to annoyance (Klinkenborg, 2008). In contrast to the other kinds of pollution, light pollution does not get dirty like air pollution or water pollution does, and that's why the term light pollution is not the best term used to describe the waste of light (Narisada & Schreuder, 2005). “More of our children should be able to look up at night and see that the Milky Way is not just a candy bar” ("Light pollution", 1998, para. 7) solutions to reduce light polllution (start from your own):

step 1: Simply Turn off unnecessary lights when you are going outside from your room or wash room.
Step 2: Try to turn on the lights in your home after 4 pm and its better to use candles while sleeping if you needed.
step 3: It's better to use light bulbs which save the energy of the electricity in your home.
step 4: If your nieghbours are consuming a lot of lights, do not hesitate to advise them. Effects of air pollution on human health Respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer (Mission, n.d.). 1. Walking instead of using cars or using public transportation such as the metro or the bus (“Air pollution: Effects and solutions,”2006). 2. Planting trees decrease the quantity of carbon dioxide since it releases oxygen (“Air pollution: Effects and solutions,”2006). 3. Buy hybrid cars instead of normal cars because hybrid cars release less gas (“Air pollution: Effects and solutions,”2006). 4. Carpool, instead of going to school/work in different cars go to school/work with your friends/colleagues (“Air pollution: Effects and solutions,”2006). Humans should enjoy watching stars at night because they are precious and irreplaceable. Moreover, using too much light at night can destroy that beautiful view (Klinkenborg, 2008).
