A CHILD IN ANCIENT ROME BY CORMAC O'HANLON
A1 SCHOOL WOMEN PLEBIANS WOMEN IN ROME PATRICIANS DISCIPLINE GRAMMATICUS LUDUS PUNISHMENT ENTERTAINMENT ROMANS WERE VERY STRICT ON RULES , ROMAN TEACHERS USED TO BEAT A STUDENT IF THEY STOOD OUT OF LINE.
IN SCHOOL CHILDREN WERE MADE PAY IF THEY BROKE THEIR ABACUS , STYLUS OR WAX TABLET. OFTEN CHILDREN WOULD BE BEATEN WITH A WOODEN CANE CALLED A BIRCH IT WOULD HAVE SPLIT ENDS TO MAKE IT MORE PAINFUL ROMAN WOMEN HAD TO TAKE CARE OF THE CHILDREN. IN A PLEBIAN HOUSEHOLD THEY COOKED , CLEANED , TOUGHT AND TOOK CARE OF THEIR CHILDREN. LIFE WAS TOUGH FOR PLEBIAN FAMILIES BECAUSE OF THEIR POOR LIVING CONDITIONS , EQUALITY AND THEIR LACK OF SANITATION , FOOD AND LUXURIES. WOMEN WERE NOT EQUAL TO MEN IN ROMAN TIMES IN FACT THEY WERE NOT EVEN REGARDED AS CITEZENS OF ROME. THEY WERE NOT ALLOWED TO WORK AND HAD KNOW RIGHT TO SPEAK THEIR MIND OR TALK BACK. OFTEN WOMEN OF ROME WERE SEXUALLY ABUSED OR KILLED FOR STEPPING OUT OF LINE. PATRICIAN CHILDREN LIVED VERY EASY LIVES. THEY HAD FOOD HANDED TO THEM , THEIR CLOTHES WASHED , EDUCATION AND RESPECT. SLAVES DID ALL THE WORK AND OFTEN HAD TO TAKE CARE OF NOT ONLY THE CHILDREN BUT MOTHER AND FATHER TOO. ROMAN WOMEN HAD SLAVES TO DRESS THEM AND FIX THEIR HAIR. OLDER CHILDREN AGED 12 - 16 WENT TO A SCHOOL CALLED GRAMMATICUS WHERE THEY WOULD REACH THEIR POTENTIAL JOB AT THE BASILICA OR LAW COURT. IN THIS SCHOOL THE SCHOLARS LEARNT GREEK AND ROMAN HISTORY , LITERATURE , GRAMMAR , GEOMETRY AND ARITHMETIC. FROM THE AGE OF 7 RICH PATRICIAN CHILDREN WOULD ATTEND A SCHOOL CALLED A LUDUS , HERE THEY WOULD LEARN READING AND WRITING OF THE LATIN LANGUAGE AND ARITHMETIC. LATER THEY WOULD MOVE ONTO GRAMMATICUS A SCHOOL FOR OLDER CHILDREN AGED BETWEEN 12 - 16 HOME SCHOOLING THE VERY RICH COULD AFFORD GREEK SCHOLARS TO TEACH THEIR CHILDREN. IN SOME CASES SLAVES TOUGHT THE CHILDREN , THOUGH THIS WAS UNCOMMON DUE TO THE FACT THAT SLAVES WERE NOT EDUCATED ENOUGH ROMAN CHILDREN WENT TO THE COLLUESEUM TO WATCH GLADIATORAL FIGHTS AND ALSO WENT TO THEATRES TO WATCH SHOWS AND PLAYS. IN THE PLEBIAN HOUSEHOLDS YOUNG BOYS WERE TOUGHT HOW TO FIGHT BEFORE THE CHANCE OF THEM BECOMING A GLADIATOR. ROMAN GIRLS YOUNG GIRLS STAYED AT HOME AND WERE TOUGHT LABOUR SKILLS SUCH AS SOWING AND WEAVING , THEY WERE ALSO TOUGHT HOW TO COOK AND CLEAN. THESE SKILLS WOULD BE NEEDED FOR WHEN THEY WERE THEY WERE OLDER A CHILD POWER OF MEN MEN RAN THE HOUSES AND BUISNESSES AND WERE ENTITLED TO BEAT , EVICT OR EXECUTE ANY OF THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS ALTHOUGH THIS WAS FROWNED UPON. WOMEN WOMEN HAD NO RIGHTS AND LIVED VERY HARSH LIVES.
THEY HAD TO DO PLENTY OF WORK AT HOME BUT COULD NOT WORK FOR SOCIETY. MEN MEN HAD LIFE EASIER THAN WOMEN. THEY HAD RIGHTS FOR A START AND COULD WORK , SOCIALISE AND LIVE A PROPER LIFE AS A CITEZEN OF ROME BEING BEATEN WAS A COMMON PUNISHMENT AND WAS NESCESARY ACCORDING TO THE ROMANS. BUT OTHER PUNISHMENTS SUCH AS EVICTION , TORTURE OR DEATH WERE NOT. IF A CHILD STEALS HE WOULD BE TIED TO A CROSS AND KILLED BY TO SOLIDERS JAMMING SPEARS INTO HIS SIDES. THIS WAS VERY GRUESOME AND WAS THE FORM OF DEATH KNOWN AS CRUCIFICTION. GOOGLE IMAGES
