Transcript of Cardiac Muscle Cell

What part of the United States produces the largest number of cardiologists?
The heartland.
Also known as cardiac muscle cells, and its function is to shorten and lengthen the muscle fibers in order for the heart muscles to stay intact while the heart is beating. Also, to carry electrical impulses sent out by pacemaker cells to the muscles signaling the heart to pump.

Mitochondria and Other Organelles
Mitochondria are the energy producers of cells, and the heart needs a lot of energy because the heart doesn’t get a chance to rest so it must be continuously supplied with energy
Particularly the left ventricle, because that is the only chamber that pushes blood into another chamber, is rich in mitochondria since the heart requires an efficient continuous source of energy
Mitochondria, which are larger compared to those of other cell types, occupy longitudinal spaces between myofibrils
Each cardiac cell contains myofibrils, which are specialized organelles consisting of long chains of sarcomeres, the fundamental unit of muscle cells

Shape and Location
Cardiac muscle cells are rectangular shaped cells connected by intercalated disks
Intercalated disks connect cardiac muscle cells to work as a single functional organ, supporting the synchronized contraction of cardiac tissue
Cardiomyocytes make up the atria and ventricles of the heart and the pacemaker cells are distributed throughtout the heart
Pacemaker cells carry the impulses that are responsible for the beating of the heart
Cardiomyocytes contain only one nucleus, unlike the multinucleated skeletal cells
Cardiomyocytes have a high mitochondrial density, which allows them to produce lots ATP quickly, making them highly resistant to fatigue

Sarcomeres are the bands of alternating dark and light between mitochondria within a myofibril
The longitudinally oriented cell boundaries are straight and exhibit extensive gap junctions
Gap junctions are a specialized intercellular connection between a multitude of cells; directly connecting the cytoplasm of two cells which allows molecules and ions to pass freely between cells

Biological Processes
Mitochondria hosts all energy production using carbohydrates
Lipid droplets partially enveloped by mitochondria in the spaces between cardiac myofibrils reveal a metabolic partnership that can serve as an alternative energy source for muscle
In the cardiac muscle cells there are glycogen granula (capsules); they serve as an instant source for cell respiration
Contraction of the heart is tightening and relax is normal
Contraction depolarizes the cardiomyocytes because sodium, potassium, and calcium diffuses between cells and relax is repolarization; because the ions of sodium, potassium, and calcium return to their original place
