Context Clues
What if I told you I had a trick that would make it so you would rarely have to use a dictionary?
Well, they are not so much "tricks" as they are "Clues"
Context Clues can help you to determine the meaning of unfamiler words
Context clues are bits of information from the text that, when combined with prior knowledge, allow you to decide the meaning of unknown words in the story or article you are reading
As a reader you must act similar to a detective and put together clues from sentences surrounding an unknown word in order to make an intelligent “guess” as to what the definition of a word is.
Do you ever feel really confused when you are reading because there are so many words you don't understand?
Utilizing Context clues while reading can ensure that you won't feel like the people in this next clip!
Let's take a quick look at some of the different types of context clues you may encounter
Dear Diary,

I overslept this morning. I had to eat my bowl of "poof-poofs" very quickly, and I almost missed the "tramzam". When I got to school, I realized I had forgotten my "zilgping" . Luckily, Ms. Jutzi is very "zoosh", and told me I could bring it tomorrow.
After school, some friends and I played "plingming." It’s a new game I am learning. We scored 7 points and they only scored 5 points, so we were the "zoiters!"
Dad says that next weekend we’re going to the "fladder" . I can’t wait! I love to swim and play in the sand. I hope I don’t get a sunburn though.
Well, I better go to bed soon. I don’t want to wake up late again and miss my tramzam!

The floors of the restaurant were extremely "scuzzy." They were covered with spilled grease, crumbs of food, and wads of gum.

The tarantula spider has tiny "bristles" on its legs that can prick its enemy.

"Jabberwocky" is a poem of nonsense verse written by Lewis Carroll, originally featured as a part of his novel Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1872). The book tells of Alice's travels within the back-to-front world through a looking glass.

Alice finds a book written in a strange language that she can't read. Understanding that she is travelling in an inverted world, she sees it is mirror-writing. She finds a mirror and holds it up to a poem on one of the pages, to read out the reflection of "Jabberwocky". She finds it as puzzling as the odd land she has walked into, which we later discover is a dreamscape.
It is considered to be one of the greatest nonsense poems written in the English language.
`The time of broiling dinner, i.e. the close of the afternoon'.

`Smooth and active'.

A species of Badger. They had smooth white hair, long hind legs, and short horns like a stag. Lived chiefly on cheese.

`to scratch like a dog'.

to screw out holes in anything.

An extinct kind of Parrot. They had no wings, beaks turned up, and
made their nests under sun-dials; lived on veal.

`grave and solemn’

A species of land turtle. Head erect, mouth like a shark, the front fore legs curved out so that the animal walked on its knees; smooth green body; lived on swallows and oysters.

Step 1: Please read the poem “The Jabberwocky” and summarize its meaning in a paragraph.

Step 2: Read it again and underline or highlight any words you do not know.

Step 3: Please translate the words you do not know into your own definition
