A Testable Hypothesis A student conducts an experiment using two types
of batteries, labeled "Battery A" and "Battery B."
she places each battery into indentical flashlights and
leaves the flashlights on to determine which battery has
a longer life. Which of the following hypotheses is an applicable, testable hypothesis for this experiment? A. Battery A produces a brighter light than does Battery B. B. The flashlight with Battery A has a hotter bulb than Battery B. C. The flashlight with Battery A stays on longer than does the flashlight with Battery B. D. Battery A is better for flashlight use than is Battery B. C is correct because it is logical that if both flashlights are left on for the same amount of time, then the flashlight that stays on the longest has the battery that has the longest battery life. Why is A incorrect? This question is all about the Scientific
Method. The steps included in this method are as follows:
1. Problem: Establish a question you need to answer. 2. Research: find out as much as you about your question and related topics using resources such as books and the Internet. Why is B incorrect? D is incorrect because it states an inference, not a hypothesis. 3. Hypothesis: Make an educated guess about the outcome of your experiment. (Don't forget to include your independent/dependent variables) 4. Experiment: Perform the task. Make sure to test it multiple times so that you can make sure your data is accurate. The most valid experiments are tested more than once. Also, record your data in a table. 5. Analysis: Analyze your data. 6. Conclusion: Summarize your findings. Be sure to state whether your hyposthesis was proven or disproven and support it with data from your experiment. If any changes were to be made, mention those as well.
