6.
Develop and visualise recommendations
Studies are the
center of the circle
How to improve the studies ? Overview study plan
Analysis of the study plan
Engineering and management (bachelor), University of applied sciences
-> fundamental knowledge (1-2 semester)
-> subject-specific knowlege (3-4 semester)
-> practical knowledge(6-7 semester)
How to improve the Studies ?
Benchmarking the ranking leaders
Interviews with students
Own opinion
Setting up an overall E-learning offer
Comparison HS Aalen and HS München (ranking.zeit.de):
-> Incomplete Moodle offer
-> Hardly used by professors
-> State of the art -> “must have”
-> Effort for a Moodle page is small

Expand the E-learning offer
Informing professors about importance
Giving support to them

Recommendation:
“Product lifecycle management”: exercises and solutions
“Elektrotechnik”: Summary videos
“Automatisierungstechnik”: interaction students and professor
-> No professor is using e-tests

Good example:

Introducing E-Tests (online tests)
Missing in the study plan!
-> Support in difficult subjects
-> Review of the current preparation level
-> Quick and easy

Recommendation:

Obligatory e-tests for exam permission in Moodle
Exercise -> one solution (formula with variables)
-> Exercise with different numbers for each student
-> Student calculates at home and enters his solution
-> Program checks solution and gives response automatically
Example for a possible e-test in technical mechanics
Re-organizing the exams
Scheduling of the exams is too late -> Students learn for nothing
6 - 9 tests in 12 days -> Good preparation is not possible
2 exams on the same day -> bad effect on the grades
Holidays: 2 – 2.5 months -> long enough

Recommendation:
Set dates of tests in the beginning of the semester
Expand the time between exams
No more 2 test on the same day

Improving the evaluation process
Comparison HS Aalen and HS München (ranking.zeit.de):
Current evaluations are useless
Recommendation:
Obligatory evaluations every year
Information to students (in front of secretariat)
Bad results -> driving measures

Expanding the practical experience during the studies
Facts about the HM (ranking.zeit.de):
Lack of content: “skills in methodology” and “social skills“
Good offers at “Career center” and “FK 13”
Two possibilities:

Recommendation:
Obligatory implementation in the study plan
More practical experience in all lectures (if possible)

Skills in methodology
Recommendation:
Project and time management concerning studies in the first semester
More IT-Skills in studies: Word, Excel and PowerPoint
More case studies during the studies
Social skills
-> Lecture “Schlüsselqualifikationen”
-> 7th semester -> too late
But students need working experience
for “Schlüsselqualifikationen”

Recommendation:
Overthinking the content of “Schlüsselqualifikationen”
Credits for moderation -> from 3rd semester
Credits for social activities (fixed implementation in studies)

Improving the writing process of the bachelor thesis

Interviews with alumni
Problem: Choose a professor
No information for future alumni

Recommendation:
Introducing a short evaluation
Information to the students

-> Students could decide which professor is the best one
Warning concerning the Trend questions in the CHE survey
Question: Positive, neutral and
negative trends in certain areas

Some areas like scripts, books, excursions, ... were financed by study fees in the past

Recommendation:
Measures to control the financial situation of the university
Searching for alternative source of capital

International justification:
Obligation to stay abroad
Compared to other "Hochschulen" we have no obligatory semester to stay abroad.

The result is that we have a bad ranking for international justification.

Compare Munich to Albstadt:

Introduce obligatory exchange programs or work with Erasmus

= Win more points and so have a better place in the CHE ranking

International programs, joint degree
- A lot of partner universities for Munich (170) but just one exchange program with Plymouth

=> Euro master

Others:

- "Doppelbachelor" in Shanghai (2 semester) and "Doppelmaster" in Grenoble (2 Semester)

- Insufficient for a good place in the CHE ranking  Have to introduce more

Percentage of foreign students:
Has increased this year
Coming from everywhere
==> Different cultures = diversity
High percentage of foreign students

Internationality of the faculty
Own experience:
- 2 Welcome days for exchange students
- Present the Hochschule
- How to register ourselves in courses (Courses in English but: problem to register in the german courses)
- Life in Munich ex. Semesterticket(MVG), things to visit...
- I Club => Meet other exchange students = easier to adapt ourselves

-Difficult to find a place where to live
Courses in foreign language
- German courses for exchange students (A1-B1)
- A lot of language courses (FK13): Chinese, English, French, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish.
- 70 courses in English (technique, engineering..) Very big choice and we are able to improve our English.

But students need knowledge for these courses
