The art of
conversations that matter
Effective listening is a mutual practice, so that both participants grow in precise and
profound awareness of one another, and it uses doubt, skepticism, and confusion,
permitting and embracing them as allies.
Boundaries and Limits
Recognizing one’s boundaries and limits that arise through our uniqueness allows us to
look at ourselves with awe as well as at “other” with awe. These are the distinctions that
allow differentiation, the difference that makes a difference. When the boundaries of
differences meet, the opportunity for creative emergence arises.
Emergence is the “something new” that arises at the boundaries. It has the qualities of
flow, unpredictability, surprise, delight and wonder.
The learning community becomes at once an individual itself and a group holding
individuals in its field. “Self” and “other” take on expanded meaning.
- Dee Hock
Concentration and Awareness
‘In a learning society facilitators are people who help peoplefind the path to reach their own objectives faster, they facilitateencounters between people and with models, puttingthemselves and other people out of the way if they are notneeded. They create services, they advise on methods forpeer learning sources, places, people, books, access. Theysupport people's initiatives and initiate some themselves.’- Ivan Illich
