It was always made of stone.
It was built to protect the people not tarp them in a single area.
It was built to separate the communist and democratic sides of Berlin.
It was built by the German Democratic Republic.
At first it only took 24 hours to build.
It was originaly a chain link fence.
It was built to keep the East Berliners trapped in East Berlin,.
The Berlin Wall started as a barbed-wired fence.
The Berlin Wall was 103 miles long.
The Berlin Wall ended as a twelve foot tall concrete structure.
It was constructed in 1961, but was torn down in 1989.
At least 136 people died trying to cross the wall as about 150 people successfully crossed the wall.
The wall was used to keep the east Berliners out of West Berlin.
The east side of Berlin was taken over by the Soviet communists where west Berlin was taken over by the Americans, British, and eventually the French.
The Berlin Wall took two days to tear down. The Berliners took hammers and chisels to the wall tearing it down piece by piece.
Behind the wall on the East German side was called a “Death Strip”.
It had patches of soft sand (to show footprints), floodlights, vicious dogs, trip-wire machine guns and patrolling soldiers with orders to shoot escapees on sight.
