What's Lake Hiller?
Salt lake on Middle Island of Western Australia
Tourist Attraction
Can you swim in the lake?
Lake Heller is just a salt lake, but is perfectly safe to swim in. Although, it's not in an advised swim area
Discovered by Captain Flinders in 1802 after climbing island peak
John Thistle collected water and found it to be saturated
Located on Middle Island
600 meters long
Surrounded by sand & Eucalyptus trees
Sand dunes separate from Southern Ocean

Due to the high salt content, it's very easy to float in the lake without trying

The lake isn't always pink but due to green alga Dunaliella salina, halobacterium Halobacteria cutirubrum, and/or high concentration of brine prawn it changes colors.
Once lake water raches higher sanity than sea water, and temp/light is right, the alga gets red pigment beta carotene
Pink halobacteria grow in the salt crust at the bottom of the lake & color of the lake is a result of the balance between, D. salina and H. cutirubrum.
(Scientests don't "for sure" know why lake is pink but this is what most think)
