The intensity of the anger can depend on the situation and personal factors. An athlete whose personal identity is strongly rooted in being an athlete/player/competitor will feel they have lost a part of their identity and not being able to perform will cause much distress When we get injured our emotions can be very different and make us react in different ways. Anxiety is the negative effects of stress. Common reactions from injured people are;
panic / fear
sadness
demotivation Frustration is commonly linked with anger. An athlete may become frustrated. This may be for multiple reasons. Isolation due to injury can cause distress for an athlete. Injury prohibits you from training with team mates and playing matches. This separation can cause disassociation. Motivation to work to recover will be lost causing the injury to last longer.
Anxiety can lead an athlete to be impatient. The desire to return to action can make an athlete believe they are sufficiently recovered when in fact they are not. This leads to further injury and more time out. When an athlete gets injured all they want to do is recover so they can return to sport. Frustration can be caused if they feel treatment is not occurring quickly enough. While injured an athlete's motivation may decrease as they are not competing. Motivation speeds up recovery as more strength and rehabilitation exercises will be completed allowing for a shorter time out. Allows the athlete to see the progress made towards full recovery. These may be particularly important when recovering from long term injury. Goals set for stages of rehabilitation to keep the athlete motivated. When soft tissue is impacted blood vessels will rupture. Swelling occurs as blood fills the surrounding muscular tissue whilst blood vessels dilate - This is bruising
Healing will begin within 24 hours through blood clotting so no more blood can get into surrounding tissue - Healing will then go on for as long as is needed up to about 21 days Strain Intra Scar tissue is vital for the repair of damaged tissue
It forms in the injury site in a haphazard way
Must be stretched to form the scar tissue into straight, parallel lines so it is strong
Ensuring that the muscle is healed well with the scar tissue will reduce the risk of further injury Soft tissue Hard tissue This is where bones, ligaments or tendons get damaged.
Will often result in a lengthy healing process with the injury site immobilised in plaster, or in some extreme cases surgery A strain is where a muscle gets put under too much of a pulling force to the point where it can be stretched or even torn Sprain This is an injury to ligaments and comes in three grades, 1 being the minor stretching, 3 being complete tearing
Usually identified by swelling, pain and inflammation Internal bleeding into or around a muscle Bleeding INTO a muscle - leads to a build up of pressure and a significant reduction in strength Inter Bleeding AROUND the muscle - much quicker to heal as blood can escape Once reality hits, an athlete may get depressed at the uncertainty of their future. They may get down because they are worried about being dropped by teams or sponsors. They may also get depressed about missing out on something they have been training for. E.g. David Beckham injuring his achilles tendon and missing the World Cup Thank you for watching
