Thanks to its history and also the geographical position,Thessaloniki has become a long-standing
multicultural
city with many communities creating and living together in harmony. Over the last 20 years, with the collapse of Eastern Europe’s borders and the incorporation of Bulgaria and Romania to the European Union, these characteristics have become more striking.
CULTURE

EVERY YEAR
Every year the city hosts:
1)the International Film Festival (www.filmfestival.gr ),

International Documentary Festival(www.tdf.filmfestival.gr) and
3)International Book Fair (www.thessalonikibookfair.com )

Also, every autumn, for almost half a century,
the
Festival of Dimitria (www.dimitria.thessaloniki.gr )
is organized by the Municipality of Thessaloniki with a program
that includes several events.

The city was founded in
315 BC,
in the early years of the Hellenistic period.
Its founder was Cassander, the King of Macedonia, who joined 26 scattered settlements of this area into a single city to honour his wife,
Thessaloniki,
who was the sister of
Alexander the Great
.
The city came under
Roman
rule.
Later became the second largest city of
BYZANT
(the eastern Roman Empire).
HISTORY
Was the second most important city of the Ottoman Empire until its liberation from the Turks and its incorporation into the Greek State in 1912.
In recent years the city hosted major international cultural events:

European Capital of Culture 1997,
-Biennale of Young Creators in 1986 and 2011,
-
Womex 2012.
THESSALONIKI
Famous for its everyday life and its friendly profile, the city has a massive selection of
cafes
as well as
restaurants
,
tavernas
and
ouzeris
.
And also, Thessalonikis’ nightlife is second to none, with a plethora of cafes, vibrant bars and clubs. It’s a city which, as they say, “never sleeps”.
