The Brand New Kid
The 'Brand New Kid' I got to know very well is Nell. Nell is in grade nine and she is in the special ed class. Every Wednesday I got to spend time with Nell and helped her in many different activities we had done. I also enjoyed introducing all my friends to Nell and we all enjoyed spending time with her in the morning or whenever we had time to stop and talk to her in the hall.
The event I enjoyed participating in with Nell the best was the Special Olympics. For three weeks up to the event I would be sure to help Nell practice the races she would be participating in. Nell and I usually practiced the noodle toss, beanbag toss and the basketball toss. I remember Nell not missing one shot during the basketball toss! She was awesome! Finally the day came when Nell got to show off her skills. The Special Olympics has defenitly impacted Nell and all the other participants in a huge way. Nell was so excited and could not wait until the day would come. Nell got two second place ribbons and a participant ribbon as well. She did a great job!
I loved getting to know Nell and know she will do great in her further years at St,Max! She puts a smile on everyone's face.

Part 2: Benefits I Received
One of the biggest benefits I have received through getting to know Nell is that I made a friend. I also got to experience how Nell did things so differently then I do and I believe I learned that although everyone is different, everyone is still equal. I got to learn how to react and deal with thing's when Nell was not up to doing things the rest of the group were doing. I feel as though I benefited by gaining more patience by doing so. I also got to learn a lot about Nell's life by her telling me very interesting stories. I loved to just sit and listen to Nell talk. Another benefit I got out of getting to know Nell was that she always put a smile on my face. Even if I was in a mad mood, Nell would cheer me up. Overall I loved getting to spend time to get to know Nell and can not wait for our relationship to continue growing stronger.
With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility
With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility
Side B: Writing
I believe it means in order for power to be effective you must have the same level of responsibility. To be an effective leader you need to be able to find a good balance between power and knowing how to effectively use that power. Through having power and making decisions through that power, you need to be able to take responsibility if something goes wrong. I also believe that it means if you are in a position to do some good in the world, you should do it, if you are cautious and responsible it can't hurt but to try and do better for those around you.
I feel as though I have worked to be a 'superhero' around our school by making everyone feel welcomed and included. I think that is what true leaders should focus most on. Making sure everyone is feeling equal and welcomed. Last semester there was a girl in my class who I sat beside and I realized quickly that at lunch she would eat by herself. The next day in class I had asked her if she wanted to have lunch with a few of my friends and I. After class the following lunch she was waiting at my locker with a big smile on her face and at the end of lunch told me it was one of the nicest things anyone had done for her. In this moment I felt like a true 'superhero' knowing I made her feel better. Whenever she doesn't have anyone to eat with now she comes and finds me and we have lunch.
I also felt like a true leader by getting all of my friends involved in the Inside Ride. My friends are not the most athletic group of people, in fact I don't think any of them have even been on a team. Most of them only took gym one year out of our three because they had to. For me to get us all together, ready to ride for a good cause as hard as we possibly could was a pretty big accomplishment. Although we were all very tired we knew we had done it for a good cause and felt great for doing it. A few of them even thanked me for making them get involved and be part of such a good cause. We all ended up having a great time!

Part B: Reflections on Pictures
Our leadership class organized and ran the Special Olympics at St.Max. Our class had to do many activities in order to make the day a great one. We organized and created things such as; the map of the field showing where everything was, some of the posters and signs informing participants on where the bathrooms were etc., we also set up all the picnic tables for all the different schools and made all their lunches. Our class did a great job of making sure that everyone was organized and doing the right thing. We were also sure to have everything ready for the big day.
I feel as though our job as a class together was more important then just my job alone, I feel this way because took all of us to get everything ready and organized. We all had to put all of our effort and time into this event. I believe our job as a class was so important because we were the ones who allowed the participants of the Special Olympics and their helpers an amazing experience, a day to get exercise and most importantly have a great time,
The pictures I chose in the previous slide were all showing how much fun we all had hosting the Special Olympics and how much the special needs kids from our school enjoyed the day. I have chosen pictures of my friends and I showing how much fun we had helping out for such a good cause. I also decided to add pictures of Aaron and I, as well as Nell and I during the special day. The smiles on their faces show just how much fun they had participating! I also chose to add a picture of our banner which all the special needs kids from our school and their teachers put so much effort into, it looked beautiful.

The staff member I chose to adopt was Mrs.Figgs. I chose to adopt Mrs.Figgs because she is the teacher I help out most throughout the school year. Mrs.Figgs is one of the Special Ed teachers and she works with a student named Michael. I love helping Mrs.Figgs with Micheal and do as much as I can for them. I usually go for walks with them or go to Tim Horton's with them. I also help Mrs. by doing small tasks she may be to busy with Michael to do at the moment. Some of these tasks would be; photocopying anything she might need photocopied, getting Micheal his journal, or reading Micheal stories. Mrs.Figgs appreciated this very much and thanked me many times for doing so.
I also chose Mrs.Figgs because she is one of the nicest ladies I have ever met, she has a lot of patience and she always knows how to make people smile. Mrs.Figgs is so great with Micheal and I can easily see that they have a very strong relationship because of it. Mrs.Figgs is always there to listen and give advice.
I loved getting to know Mrs.Figgs and hope that our relationship will continue to grow stronger. I will always be there to help here whenever she needs the help and cant wait for more days spent with her and Micheal.

What She Has Done For SMK
The Lead
June 10, 2013
Ashley Meyer is a grade 11 student at St. Maximillion Kolbe Catholic High School. She is involved in many things around her school that have helped her to become the leader she is today. She is a positive influence on all of her peers, and is someone to look up to. She is in a leadership class that deals with a lot of the schools activities. Ashley has been involved in events around her school such as; the Special Olympics, the Inside ride and was recently assigned to deal with children who have special needs. Throughout all of these experiences Ashley has become more of an experienced leader who has learned many new skills that will improve her life and the lives around her. Throughout all of these events Ashley has learned how to communicate with others on a more mature and sophisticated level, she has also learned how to better understand people and how to deal with their behaviors. Ashley’s most memorable moment while being a leader at St. Maimillian Kolbe was defiantly being able to deal with children who have special needs. Doing so has helped her to become more of an experienced leader and gain more of a positive attitude. It has also taught her that not everything goes as planned and because of this she has learned how to better adjust her way of seeing things and has also learned how to properly problem solve. Another memorable moment for Ashley was being able to be a part of the Special Olympics. Ashley found this to be such an amazing experience because not only did she get to see her entire leadership class come together to make the day a great one, but she also got to see the kids in her peer mentoring class participating in all the races. The kids all did a great job and made St.Max proud. Within the next 5 years Ashley hopes to be attending Collage or University studying to become a Veterinarian Technician. During the summer of grade 11 and 12, Ashley would also like to be a camp counselor at King Camp. Ashley will continue to use her leadership skills all throughout these activities. While working with kids at the camp and talking to pet owners etc. Ashley will know how to use her skills wisely and effectively in order to handle situations maturely.

Part B
A Walk Down Memory Lane
Side B: Essay
A leader should be something everyone strives to become. Someone who likes to help others, take charge when needed, and who can always be counted on. Being a leader has not only made me feel like a much stronger, independent individual but has also allowed me to make others feel better about themselves. Helping others to feel better about themselves is a huge accomplishment for me and it makes me feel wonderful when doing so. I have been so lucky to have been able to continue working on my leadership skills especially throughout my grade 11 year.
Leadership has permanently impacted my life by giving me more advanced skills when working with other people. Through leadership I have learned how to become a more open and independent person. I have learned how to better communicate with others and have allowed myself to see things from a more open point of view. I now enjoy going out of my way to help others, even by doing small things such as opening the door for someone or smiling at someone as they walk by. Not that I was a 'keep to myself 'type of person before, but I have become more confident through learning how to be a leader that doing those things seem natural to me. I feel as though leadership has permanently impacted my life because it has given me the skills I will need in order to move on in life as a more influential person. By using the skills I have learned through leadership, I can better prepare myself for things later on in life such as; my job, buying a house, even just talking to friends and family.
The most important memory of leadership for me is being able to have learned how to work on a more personal level with those around me. I have also really enjoyed being able to better understand myself through leadership. To become a good leader you must get to know yourself before you can really 'lead'' others. I have really enjoyed getting to learn the basic leadership skills that I will continue to use for the rest of my life and I am so grateful for the opportunities and people who have allowed me to become the leader I am today.
The Real Meaning of
Side A
The definition of leadership is "The activity of leading a group of people or an organization or the ability to do this." I feel as though leadership is more than that. I believe that leadership is being able to help others in any possible way that you can and being able to act upon thought not just doing things without thinking. Leadership to me is also knowing how to react to certain situations by controlling yourself and the situation around you. Being a leader you should be seen as someone people would want to follow in the footsteps of or go to for an opinion etc. A leader should also be confident and know themselves inside and out.
Some of the experiences this year as a student leader that have led me to believe this have been; working with children with special needs. I know now that you have to become very patient and calm in order to deal with some of the challenges that may arise. As a leader you need to know how to problem solve in a positive way. I have also learned through being a student leader that people react to things differently and you need to be able to find a way to make everyone happy and involved.
Throughout all of my leadership experiences I have tried my best to use all of the things I listed as to what I believe it means to be an effective leader. I have done my best to react to things the way I feel a true leader would.

My Mom
June 10, 2013
I admire my Mom because she has been the biggest influence in my life. She is my role model. My Mom has been the person who has been there for me since day one and has never let me down. I know that I can count on my Mom for anything. My Mom takes amazing care of me and always knows what is best. Mom gives the best advice and knows exactly how to deal with any situation. My Mom has made me the person I am today and she continues to teach me how to grow into a strong, independent women. I will always look up to my Mom and hope that when I am older I will be a reflection of her. I tell my Mom everything and I love it that she listens so well. She can make me happier than anyone else can. My mom is my absolute best friend and will always be. I can't wait for our relationship to continue to grow.

Leader in Training
If I had to describe Ashley in a few words I would use kind, fun loving, compassionate. She has an amazing sense of humor and a sense of balance. Ashley is a great big sister to Maya who is 3. She is like a second Mom to her. Maya says Ashley is her best friend. When Maya is upset Ashley can always find a way to calm her down and make her feel better. On the flip side I have never heard Maya laugh harder than when they are together. Ashley takes time out to stop and help anyone in need; humans and animals. Ashley does not judge and it up sets her to hear when others do and even expresses her dislike for it. She does not care what anyone thinks and will stick up for the not so popular or special needs student, I have witnessed this myself. I can not tell you how many times I have been commended on what a sweet kid she is. I am very proud of my daughter I would not change one thing about her. Well maybe...I wish she would clean her room a bit more often! ;0)
