Born in Bonn
Moved to Vienna in 1792 to work with Haydn
Lived in Vienna until he died
Went completely deaf, but still continued to compose
Family: Johann van Beethoven, Maria Magdalena Beethoven, Kaspar Anton Karl van Beethoven, Nikolaus Johann van Beethoven
Most scholars accept 16 December 1770 as Beethoven's birthday Who was he? Clear reoccuring rhythm - tempos at mostly adagio and allegro/vivace
Very balanced melody, lots of call and response where first instruments of each section repeat the violin line
Major key, barely any chromaticism involved in any movement out of 4.
Texture: homophony- where each instrument takes turns, no polyphony
Frequently cresc. to decresc. every few bars
Second movement slows down and allows violins to play more melody than harmony whereas first movement they played a good amount of harmony
Orchestra not too large- mostly strings and woodwind
2 French horns and 2 trumpets
Third movement develops theme by taking out the slurs from ta_ya - ta ta Beethoven's First Symphony in C Major Valued imagination and emotion over intellect and reason
