Transcript of Inventions and technology created in the 1950s and 1960s

Inventions and technology made in the 1950s and 1960s Carbon Dioxide Laser Exterior Heart pacer The first the first gas laser to produce high power radiation continuously was the carbon dioxide laser, invented by Kumar Patel in 1964. the CO2 laser is used in many forms of welding, cutting and drilling, including those at the mechanical level, with materials ranging from diamonds to cigarette filters. In the medicine industry, its used in laser surgery, including the removal of tumors. There was more than one inventor that created the ATM machine, But the inventors that helped create the ATM in the 60s were James Goodfellow and James Sheperd-Barron. Sheperd-Barron had an idea in the 60s to develop a machine that dispensed money 24/7, and to people who think that Sheperd-Barron invented the first ATM then the first ATM was installed in London and he later expanded to America. A couple years later James Goodfellow was to design an automatic cash dispenser, and he did. He invented an ATM with a readable encrypted card, and the machine read it, as well as a added a numerical keypad. ATM Another invention that was made in the 60's was the hovercraft. Created by english inventor Christopher Cockerell, this "air cushion vehicle" would be supported by a cushion of air with a wind blade projected downwards which helps make the hovercraft glide easily over land or water surfaces. Hovercraft The exterior heart pacer was invented by John Hopps in 1959. Ways that he found out how to create this was by experimenting with radio frequencies that helps restore body temperature. The way the heart pacer works is when the body temperature starts to cool down(when the heart pumps slower) the heart pacer kicks in and gives the heart a boost and kicks in maintaining the normal heart rate. It was an exterior heart pacer because it was too large to be put in the body. LED lights The first practical LED lights were created in 1962 by Nick Holonyak Jr. while he was working at General Electric Company. The first LED lights to come out were red in the 60's, and wee usually used as indicators because of the dim lighting they provided. They were commonly used as replacements for incandescent indicators but now are used for appliances like TV's, calculators and even watch batteries. MR. POTATO HEAD!! MR.potato head is an american toy consisting of a plastic model of a potato which can be decorated with a variety of plastic parts that can attach to the potato main body. Created in 1952 by George Lerner. Margaret Sanger, Katherine McCormick and other scientists joined together to try and find way to make birth control available in pill form, and through the 50's experimented until in the late 50's they found it. In 1960 the pill was for sale and within two years over 1.2 million American women were using it. The way the pill works is it contains progesterone and estrogen, two common hormones found in the woman. The pill stimulates these hormones which occurs during pregnancy, tricking the body into thinking that the body is already pregnant, therefore not releasing the egg. Birth control Valium Valium was created by Leo Sternbach in 1963. It is a medication used to treat chemicals in the brain that could be unbalanced causing anxiety. It can treat anxiety disorders, muscle spasms, alcohol withdrawal, and is used with other medication to treat seizures. Avro Arrow plane Invented and designed by William Avro and Avro Canada in Malton, this jet plane was a sleek white jet interceptor that was used in the military invented in the mid fifties. It is still used but has newer technology that makes it fly farther, faster and further. Inventions in the 50's and 60's By: Andrea Francavilla and Lia Grande Intro There was a lot of new technology and inventions in the 50's and 60's. Whether it was a childhood toy or a stream of light they all benefited us then and even now. From the 50's and 60's there has been inventions such as the computer mouse, fibre optic lights, the ATM, medications, coloured TV and more and we will be continuing to talk more about some of these inventions.
