Media's Influence On Our Culture
By: Hailee Parsons
He would want us to change world hunger
If Jesus returned to earth today, he would also want us to help stop poverty because we need to give to others to receive it in return. It is our duty as humans to love one another and care for each other. As Jesus said once, "It is more blessed to give than to receive." - Acts 20:35
Nearly 1/2 of the world’s population — more than 3 billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day. More than 1.3 billion live in extreme poverty — less than $1.25 a day.
According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day due to poverty.
Through media, we can help make the world aware and give to others who need it in return. For, "Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed." - Proverbs 19:17
He would want us to change global warming
How does the media shape our culture positively?
How does media shape the culture of today's youth?
The media connects us to our family, friends and other cultures
People live all around the world and the media helps connect them to their friends, family and others that have similar cultures to their own. The media can also open our views on different perspectives of others. People can share their opinions and ideas on the internet, T.V., magazines, movies and so on that help shape their own culture too.
For example in the movie "The Help", it gives different perspectives on the way you see others - or in the movies case, how you treat others with different color skin. It also shows us the way they lived and their culture in the 1960's, sharing the opinions and cultures.
The media also connects us to our families and friends, sharing their cultures and traditions within that particular group. Media like the internet or newspaper help us to communicate information to others like the latestnews or what the current trend is.
It increases our knowledge and education
The Media can present information in many different ways like on a T.V. show or on the latest tweet. It also increases our knowledge and education on what we know in the world. If we never had media to share news, no one would know about Neil Armstrong walking on the moon or Rosa Parks fighting against racism and standing up for what she believed in.
Many kids shows today are meant to educate and help them learn such as "The Magic School Bus" or "Sesame Street" or "Mickey Mouse" by counting, learning about planets or even life lessons.
Personal Response
I believe Jesus would challenge us to change the way we take care of others and our environment like world hunger, poverty and global warming. We should show forgiveness, compassion towards others and to give and not expect to receive in return. I think we should follow the golden rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" - Matthew 7:12 and apply this to everything we do in our lives.
Personal Response
If Jesus returned to earth today,
what would He challenge
us to change and why?
How does media shape our
culture negatively?
Personal Response
I believe media greatly impacts and shapes the culture of today's youth including myself. The images, videos or written words used in media can affect how we see the world or others, whether it changes our opinions, beliefs, interests or how we express ourselves.
T.V. shows or movies that I watch like Marvel movies, "Teen Wolf", "The Vampire Diaries" or "Grey's Anatomy" affect me because they change my views and opinions on different world issues or point of views like slavery, world hunger etc... and this a big part in how media shapes the culture of today's youth.
Media can influences our opinions and beliefs
Media can cause people to have techno-isolation
He would want us to help stop poverty
Media can influence what your interests/hobbies are
Personal Response
It can lead to Violence and Bullying
It can influence our body image and health
Media can influence how we act or express ourselves
Media is a big part of what shapes the culture of today's youth. What we see on television, the internet, magazines, movies and our phones influence our opinions, beliefs, our interests/hobbies and how we act or express ourselves.
When people see a movie or T.V. show, it influences what they believe or think. Most types of media are trying to portray a particular image or message to the audience watching or using it. For example in T.V. shows like "The Vampire Diaries", "Teen Wolf", "Supernatural" etc... that youth today are watching, have actors who are deemed "perfect"- the right size, physically fit and beautiful.
Also movies like "The Freedom Writers" portray the message that no matter your race, color, or ethnicity, we should all treat each other the same cause we are only human.
These types of images and messages affect youths or anybody's opinions and beliefs. What they think is "perfect" or "right".
This video focuses on our image and what we think we should look like. Youth all around the world use media everyday and it shows us the "perfect" image or what we should look like. This influences us because our opinions and beliefs on our image can change due to media or what is popular. If everyone thinks skinny and tall are what makes girls beautiful or being physically fit and tall makes guys handsome, then teens and kids all around the world may try to fit these standards to be "perfect".
Today's youth love to listen to music, watch T.V, and go on the internet everyday to see whats new or popular. Sometimes you read on social media that your favorite actor loves to read or play a particular sport. Maybe a phrase or word said in a song interests you and you want to look into it. One of your friends or family members posted about this new movie or game on Facebook and you may want to try it. All these different scenarios show how media can influence our interests or hobbies.
For example having access to T.V's and the internet allow youth to see sports like basketball, baseball and hockey games which could spike an interest to play that sport.
Media such as advertisements can influences our hobbies or interests. The advertisement for "Toys R Us" can cause kids to want to buy that toy or try out the new Nerf gun. This can give them a new hobby or interest to do in their daily lives.
We express ourselves by the way we dress, what we like, who we hang out with or how we act. Going on social media sites or reading magazines shows us whats popular to wear, act or say. For example the popular brands of clothes like garage, old navy, gap etc... that are advertised or shown on screen influence youth to wear that particular brand.
The attitudes of characters, actors or writers can influence the way people act, the things they say to each other or how they interpret things.
With action/adventure films, children tend to emulate the movie hero, engaging them to violent acts thinking that it is acceptable because his hero became successful in the end.
With cartoon programs, not everything is good-natured. There are those that show subtle acts of violence and deceitful acts against others. In return, children tend to copy the characters and think that deceiving other people is a way to confront their problems. They learn to transfer these ill behaviors to friends. For example in "Star Wars", light savors are used to fight and stores came out with toy light savors, engaging youth to play with these weapons.
Also super hero movies such as "Spider-man", "The Hulk" or "Captain America" youth want to act like these characters whic could lead o violent acts.

I believe the media shapes our culture positively by connecting us to other cultures around the world such as popular trends, music, actors and movies. I think it helps us be involved with others.
I know a lot of my favorite music such as 5 SOS, Fall Out Boy, All Time Low and Selena Gomez are from other parts of the world like the US and UK. Music is a big part of my culture and without media, I wouldn't have the access to it. The media can bring people together and we can share our experiences with others.
This video shows us the statistics on the use of social media and how many people use it in the world today. A lot of people are dependent on it to communicate, share ideas and spread our cultures around the world.
News channels talk about whats going on in the world, whether its in their own city or all the way across the world. Without media, we would have no idea about whats going on in Iraq, or the tsunami that destroy many places in Japan, poverty and many other global issues. Media keeps us aware of whats going on in the world and can help us take action and make a difference on the topic of interest.
For example, Free the Children Organization is a website that can help people make a change, to educate, engage and empower youth into becoming active local and global citizens.
Techno-isolation is how new technologies are causing people to become less interactive with people, and more indulged in their own technological devices such as phones, X-Box's, computers etc... We use these technological devices for media to communicate, interact and for our own personal reasons.
It is a big thing in the culture of modern teenagers. You could be in a room full of people, but not talk to a single one of them because you are texting people in other places or listening to your Ipod totally ignoring the world. This shows that even though technology helps us to communicate with people, it can hinder the every day, face to face relationships we have with people around us.
This video talks about how people are always on there technological devices and don't realize what life outside media has to offer. People are too consumed in their phones to interact with the people around them which negatively affects our culture.
Advertising can jeopardize one's idea of what beauty and health is, seeing that products revolve around these two aspects in an outrageous fashion. Kids can become obsessed with the way they look, especially through beauty reality shows and magazines. It can lead to health problems like anorexia and bulimia, or use the antics of questionable celebrities in the industry as influences.
Obesity is on the rise for kids who plant themselves in front of the television, not budging for hours on end. This can fuel a child's inability to stay active, thus leading them to gain weight over time.
Media advertises or shows what the "perfect" image is and it cause people to change what they look like, who they are and can give themselves health issues to try to fit this image.
Violence is a major factor when it comes to media, being a potentially dangerous instigator when it comes to young audiences. Kids are influenced easily by what they see on television or the Internet, mimicking such acts on elders, or kids their age.
Video games such as Black Ops and Call Of Duty involve guns, blood and violence. Kids are growing up seeing these types of things and thinking its normal, no longer being as disturbed by it.
Also, there is going to be bullying when it comes to media whether its because of different opinions, race or disabilities. Being exposed to this harassment is damaging to the self-esteem of others and can lead to violence or depression.
On average, teens have 5.68 hours of media exposure per day which can lead to a higher chance of being exposed to violence or bullying.

I believe media shapes our culture negatively by using too much technology/media to get through life. Teens are always on their phones and media use is getting bigger and bigger everyday. I think we are relying too much on it and soon it will lead to actual violence and more health issues in people. I know i use media all the time and it is a big part of my culture.
It can influence how we act, look or behave like the song "Uptown Funk". It talks about being hot, clubbing and drinking which should not be encouraged. The video makes it seem that it is okay to do these things which it is not.
If Jesus returned to earth, he would challenge us to try to change world hunger because we can help make a difference in others lives if we put our minds to it. There are around 805 million people in the world that do not have enough food to lead a healthy active life. That's about one in nine people on earth.
The vast majority of the world's hungry people live in developing countries such as Asia or Africa, where 13.5 percent of the population is undernourished.
Every 3.6 seconds a person dies from hunger- 75% of them are children.
If we can use media to make others more aware and tell them that we can work together to help stop world hunger, we can make a big difference in others lives.

God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” - Genesis
Jesus would challenge us to change global warming because God made human in his image and we are not taking care of the earth he made for us.
We are burning more and more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere which is leading to the gradual heating of Earth's surface, oceans and atmosphere. The melting of glaciers are causing the sea level to rise, animals are changing migration patterns and plants are changing the dates of activity.
To help change global warming, we need to recycle, reduce the use of greenhouse gases and start taking action in general. We need to start taking care of the Earth God gave us and save everything that lives and is a part of it.
