Transcript of CELLS
A cell is the basic building block of life. Cells are composed of organelles, structures of a cell that act as specialized organs. Each of these little organelles work together to help the cell function.
smooth endoplasmic reticulum
rough endoplasmic reticulum
Animal Cell Diagram
Plant Cell Diagram
provides support and protection of plant cells;
The cell wall is like the foundation and wall of a house.
food producers of plant cells
The chloroplasts are like solar panels because they take energy from the sun to produce power, or in this case, food.
controls movement of materials in/out of cell
A cell membrane is like a fence with a gate, because it protects the cell and regulates what goes in and out.
consists of all organelles inside the cell
Cytoplasm is like fruit jello in a cup, because it provides support and holds the fruit in place.
control center of the cell
The nucleus is like a person's brain, because it controls all actions of the body.
center of nucleus , composed of proteins and RNA
The nucleolus is like the capitol building. It is the main building in the main city.
combination of DNA and proteins in the cell
The chromatin is like a library because it holds the information of a cell.
central to the transport and modification of proteins within the cell
The golgi apparatus is like a post office, because it ships mail like the golgi apparatus ships proteins.
provides power to the cell
The mitochondria is like a power plant that gives energy to an entire city.
functions as a packaging system
The smooth ER is like a factory or processing plant, that produces things needed for the cell, like certain hormones.
The rough ER is like an assembly line that assembles proteins.
storage center for the cell
The vacuole is like a locker, because it stores things for the cell, like a locker stores books for a student.
help the cell when it is time to divide
A centriole is like a straw because it lets things get from one end to the other end.
main microtubule organizing center
A centrosome is like a library because it organizes the microtubules like a library organizes books
cell's digestive system
A lysosome is like a garbage truck because it gets rid of the waste in a cell.
works to translate RNA into proteins.
Ribosomes are like the workers of a factory, because they each have the same job, translating RNA into proteins.
The nucleus can be broken down into these parts:
nuclear pores-openings in nuclear envelope through which materials must pass
nuclear envelope-controls what goes in an out of nucleus
chromatin-mass of genetic material composed of DNA
Also found in the cytoplasm are microtubules and microfilaments.
Microtubules: fibrous, hollow rods that help support and shape the cell
Microfilaments: thin filament maintaining cell's structural integrity
