Many libraries use Dewey Decimal Classification. At the Overseas School of Colombo we also use the DDC to organize our collection.
The DDC as it is widely known was developed by Melvil Dewy in 1876, when he was only 21 years old. The DDC allows us to classify subjects using a numerical order.
The Dewey Decimal Classification can be found on the spine of a library book.
By having the number on the spine, the DDC call number can be easily identified.
You will also notice the DDC number when you use the OPAC.
Dewey was born on December 10, 1851, he started the first school for librarians.
He encouraged women to become librarians.
He came up with a system that classify the world's knowledge into a manageable unit popularly known as Dewey
