Post Modernism Applies to: literature

cultural criticism
...an intentional movement in the arts, culture, philosophy, and politics that uses various strategies to subvert what is seen as dominant in modernism or modernity. ...the idea of the postmodern or post modernity as an historical condition or position (political/ economic/ social), an era we're still supposedly in regardless of anyone's state of awareness. What is it? vs. "No definite terms, boundaries, or absolute truths exist." "Truth is relative and up to each individual to determine for himself." Patriotism, community, loyalty and personal relationships no longer matter. Political “I see the ‘orthodox’ (the people who think that hounding gays out of the military promotes traditional family values) as the same honest, decent, blinkered, disastrous people who voted for Hitler in 1933. I see the ‘progressives’ as defining the only America I care about.” Richard Rorty "..making more and using more, rather than having more." Eugene McCarthy Postmodernism is based on the position that reality is not mirrored in human understanding of it, but is rather constructed as the mind tries to understand its own personal reality. Culture American Gothic- Grant Wood American Gothic Comes to the City series by Steve A. Furman Is it taking over the world? Technology "Reality" T.V. Social Networks Where would we be without them? Should everything posted on social networks be censored? What are the limitations? should there be age limits? $3.8 Billion spent on advertising on social networks last year More people are finding out who they are based on personality tests, rather than personal experience. Literature and art are based on opinions instead of facts. Philosophical Religious Norman Rockwell
freedom of Worship The freedom of an individual or community, in public or private, to manifest religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship, and observance; the concept is generally recognized also to include the freedom to change religion or not to follow any religion. Absolute Truth? This will have a tremendous impact on Christianity. The church has its roots in an ancient pre-modern Mediterranean worldview. Slowly it has accommodated itself to the modern world. But many critics wonder whether it will be able to survive the shift to the postmodern age. Postmodern people reject the notion of absolute truth. They no longer trust authority and they reject any institution that claims to have a claim on the truth. They have become highly suspicious of facts. They believe that all truth, even to some extent scientific knowledge, is subjective, biased, and socially constructed. Truth depends on what one's culture regards as truth. Therefore the truth is not really true. Social “Culture” is an amorphous, vague thing that is next to impossible to pin-down. It is only slightly better than a child’s sense of “they”: “But mom, if I do that, they will laugh at me.” Similarly, Christians tend to make a lot of our decisions based on what “culture” will do: “This culture is going to hell in a hand basket and that’s why God is punishing it” or “We have to do this to keep the Church relevant to our culture.” A.K.A. the Aesthetic Confusion Eliminate the distinction between men and women. Economics Socialism VS. Capitalism In the past, Western economic systems were based on a male-dominated society. Men are said to have had an upper hand because they constructed society and its corresponding economic structure to their advantage. Not Anymore! Since men will not willingly relinquish their economic power to women and the poor, the government must intervene to see that economic justice is available to all. Former secretary of state, Condeleezza Rice Gender Equity Help by government or support yourself? Literature Postmodern literature, like postmodernism as a whole, is hard to define and there is little agreement on the exact characteristics, scope, and importance of postmodern literature.
