Hedwig's theme has a moderate tempo that is maintained.
Hedwigs theme has 3/4 time signature. There are a mixture of long and short notes but the rhythm is mostly made up of short notes.
OVERVIEW OF FILM
DYNAMICS AND EXPRESSIVE TECHNIQUES
The theme starts with a high register and descends to a lower register. The melody moves mostly in steps but also moves in leaps.
RELATION TO THE MOVIE.
There is repetition of the main melody played in different pitches with different instruments. The theme is played legato as the notes are smooth and connected. There are multiple cresendos and decresendo throughout the piece.
John Williams is the composer of Hedwigs theme. John Willams is an American composer, conductor and pianist. He was born on the 8th of February 1932 and is currently 82 years old. John Williams has composed for many films including Jaws, Star Wars, Superman and Indiana Jones.
The Harry Potter series follow the adventures of Harry Potter and his friends Ron and Hermionie. There has been great adventures, heartbreak and even death as they face the evil wizard Lord Volemort. The series consists of eight movies, starting in 2001 and finishing in 2011.
The theme starts with high percussion instruments playing the main melody which sounds magical. The main melody is then played with brass instruments
later on in the theme. There are upper strings that are playing flourishes behind the main melody.
The texture throughout the piece varies.
The start of the piece has a thin texture
that gets thicker as the piece goes on.
The theme has constant pitch, tempo
and rhythm changes which relate to the
movie as there are constant changes in the
mood and action of the scene. The theme starts
with the main melody being played high pitched,
which gives the theme a magical feel. This is
represented in the scene as Dumbledor is holding
The piece then changes to flourishes
played by upper strings which continue
as the main melody starts again. There is more
action in the scene as this is being played. This
time there is a thicker texture as there are more instruments. This is represented in the youtube clip
as it is a frantic scene. This is also shown as Harry is being chased by his Uncle and locked in the cupboard.
