Design Process 1. Define the problem Identify a problem that exists Determine cause Gather information 2.Brainstorm 3. Research and Generate Ideas 4. Identify Criteria and Constraints 5. Explore Possibilites 6. Select An Approach 7. Develop Design Proposal 8. Make a Model or Prototype 9. Test and Evaluate the Design 10. Refine the Design 11. Create or Make Solution 12. Communicate Processes and Results Present ideas in group Generate and record ideas Quantity not Quality Keep mind alert through rapidly paced sessions Anything goes NO critizing others Determine need, want or problem Investigate who or what it is that is affected
-consider the problem from thier perspective Total Immersion research existing solutions and identify inadequacies Listen to clients to solve problems they have discovered Perform market research to determine if need or want exists Identify end user Make sure client and engineers agree on problem Identify what the solution must do,to the degree it will be persued Identify the limitations in which the engineer must perform Compile the information into a design brief Refine ideas with constraints and tradeoffs considered Explore alternative ideas based on further knowledge and technologies create a decision matrix to compare the attributes of the various ideas and analyze the trade-off of each ones verify alignment between the idea selected and the criteria and constraints Detailed and annotated sketches Determine the type(s) of material for construction Make computer models Create Technical drawings from computer models Make study models (scaled models or mock-ups) Fabricate functional Prototype Test the prototype under controlled conditions Test under actual conditions record results Evaluate for problems and if further work is needed Reassess the validity of the design criteria and make adjustments to the design brief, if necessary Continue through design process until solution satisifies design criteria Update documentation to reflect any changes in the final solution Determine custom/mass prodution Consider packaging Present results Develop written reports Include graphic documentation charts
