Veterinarian Sarah Bush Reason History The study of animal health started in China & Egypt and has been around for centuries. 3500 B.C. 1762 Records and hieroglyphics show human efforts to maintain the health of domestic animals using herbs. The first school dedicated exclusively to veterinarian medicine was established in Lyons, France. Nearly a century after the European schools were established, the first American veterinary school was established in Iowa, Iowa State College. 1879 1863 The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) was founded. Training Veterinary schools offer 4-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine programs. The first two years are advanced training in the last two years are training in clinical procedures. During the last two years is typically when students decide if they wish to concentrate on larger animals or domestic animals. Some people choose to participate in a 1-year internship to secure more rapid advancement in the field. I chose the veterinarian career because I love animals. I have always had a family pet and I can't stand to see any animal hurt or suffering. I would enjoy the opportunity to save animals on a daily basis. According to the U.S. Bureau Labor Statistics, veterinarians are required to have a Doctor of Veterinary medicine to legally practice medicine on animals. Education Students are also required to complete supervised clinical hours where they treat and diagnose animal patients. Prior to being accepted into a DVM program, applicants must meet prerequisite requirements, which can include completing undergraduate courses or earning a bachelor's degree. Some common prerequisite courses include genetics, chemistry, biochemistry and statistics. Disadvantages NO BORING WORK ROUTINE FLEXIBILITY IN WORK ENVIORNMENT Advantages Advantages and Disadvantages You become prone to disease when working with sick animals constantly. Since there is still so much studying even after graduating from a veterinarian school, vets ofter have long hours of work. Many veterinarians say that the hardest thing to do as a vet, it putting sick animals to sleep. JOB SECURITY Demand Technology Associated According to the AMVA Market Research Statistics, the demand in vets for agricultural animals is very high. Radiography Ultrasound Laser BIG IMPACT Changes Technology changes, such as the use of lasers, ultrasound, medical imaging, etc. New technology makes a big impact on the veterinarian career. It makes it easier to examine animals and helps vets to give a diagnosis. It makes it easier to perform surgeries with less pain. Future Outlook Satisfaction Personal Professional - The opportunity to work with animals on a daily basis. - The pay. ($82,040) - Choice of work enviornment.
