Ground Water depletion
and subsidence San Joaquin Valley is one of the single largest
human alterations of Earth's surface topography Sink holes can happen abruptly over the period
of hours causing catastrophic damage (Winterpark, FL) Earth fissures can be more than
100 feet deep and several hundred
feet in length. One extraordinary fissure
in central Arizona is 10 miles long. Punjab is known as the breadbasket
of India and rightfully so as it provides
20 percent of the wheat, 11% of the rice,
11% of the cotton, from less than 2% of
the country's geographical area
