- January 1, 1919 – New York

- One of the most influential American writers of the 20th century

- Flunked out of his school in New York and was shipped of to Military school in Pennsylvania.

- World War II started – after the attack in Pearl Harbor, Salinger was drafted.

- Salinger was hospitalized during the war and suffered a nervous breakdown.
