Population Counts...
Part of 'The Ring of Fire'
Physical Features
Fiji doesn't have have a population as big as Australia, but it is big for a tiny island that isn't very famous. 896,758 is how many people have decided to stay on an island that is approximately 18,274 square kilometers. With 49 people living per sq. km, the population distribution is clustered. Suva, Fiji's capitol city, is clustered compared to the rest of the island. Other parts of the island are scattered, but since Suva is the city with the largest population, it is counted as clustered. Living in on this tiny island over 1,000 miles away from New Zealand, still gives you a high life expectancy: 71.87 years. The birth rate is 20.28 per 1000 people, while the death rate is 5.96 per 1000 people, having the natural increase be 3.40 per 1000 people. The net migration is approximately 1. The population has changed a lot from 1950 to 2000 by a 525,000 increase. The expected population by next year is 925,000 people.
