The Catcher in the Rye Plot Summary Themes Symbols Quotations Ask a Question Phoebe comes to the museum and asks Holden to take her away with him. He finds the words F*** You written on the walls of Phoebe's school and almost faints. The Gold Ring on the carousel.
The F*** you written on the walls of the museum and Phoebe's school.
Holden's Red Hunting Hat. Growing up He refuses to take her,so she gets mad at Holden, and he takes her to the zoo. Holden buys a ticket so that Phoebe can ride the carousel He walks down Fifth Ave. and calls out to Allie to keeping him from disappearing everytime he reaches a curb. Holden writes letter to Phoebe telling her to meet him at the museum so he can return her money before leaving. He sees the F*** You on the wall at the museum and at the school. Holdens red hunting hat The Golden ring on the carousel Having to let Phoebe grab the gold ring. Holden has a hard time taking in his environment. What are Holden's thoughts after he sees the F*** You at the museum? He feels depressed because he really wants to punch the person who wrote it, but knows that if he wouldn't have the guts to if given the chance. Holden also feels that there is nothing pure or of value anymore in this world. The carousel/ The Museum of Natural History "The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not say anything". -Holden Phoebe risks her safety to grab what she wants and so holden symbolically grabs his own ring by going to the instituition and trying to obtain a better life. Represents Allie cause of his red hair Holden realizes that there's not just good or bad people out in the world but that there are people who are partially good and partially bad as well. Holden wishes the world would be like the museum and the carousel, unchanging Phoebe forgives Holden and he buys her another ticket to ride the carousel. While watching Phoebe, Holden is the happiest he has been the entire novel and it starts to pour.
