Automotive engineering is a subcategory of mechanical engineering. Automotive engineers design systems and mechanics of cars. They ensure that automotive designs and systems are created to budgeted quality and cost specifications. Automobile engineers design, test, develop and manufacture automotive products such as heavy and light vehicles.

Automotive Engineers also help the automotive industry meet new challenges, for example, making sure that vehicles are safe, environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient. They also work on buses, coaches, tanks and racing cars.
In general the modern automobile is a combination of mechanical, programming, electrical, electronics, chemical and instrumentation systems that are important for most branches of engineering.

Automotive Engineering is intertwined with the make of an automobile. By definition an automobile or car is a wheeled vehicle that carries its own motor and transports passengers. The automobile as we know it was not invented in a single day by a single inventor. The history of the automobile reflects an evolution that took place worldwide.
Starting salaries can be between $27,600 and $41,000 a year. Experienced engineers can earn from $44,000 to over $69,000 a year.
You would normally work 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, but as a production engineer, you may have to work shifts.
You might work on:

•electrical and electronic instrumentation and control systems
•thermodynamics, aerodynamics and fluid mechanics
•fuel technology and emissions

The Career
The future of automotive engineering involves the improvement of fuel economy. Automotive engineers will be needed to reduce emissions, create better EV's or hybrids, clean diesel, etc.. Cars, trucks, trains and buses will always be relevant and with the proper engineering can be more convenient with better fuel economy, improved safety, better entertainment and communications.

Karl Benz, the German mechanical engineer who designed and in 1885 built the world's first practical automobile, is the father of automotive engineering. Also Henry Ford, who improved the assembly line for automobile manufacturing and invented a car transmission mechanism, plays a key role in the history of automotive engineering.

Changing customer habits and expectations cause automotive engineers to come up with new and exciting advances in automotive engineering. In the near future, cars will be expected to have interactions with the media, such as accessing Facebook, Twitter or other social media apps. Possible new levels of convenience in car sharing may mean that drivers won't feel the same need to purchase and own their own vehicle. One may be able to get inside a car, start it and pay for the ride from a simple smart phone app. This innovation into a mobile device is something which creates a new perspective on driving. Automotive engineers will soon advance security systems in cars. Cyber security is a core strategic element that can change the way people protect their vehicles.
