8. Alison (Leader) Undersea megathrust earthquake It is an earthquake that occurs underwater at the bottom of a body of water, especially an ocean. These earthquakes are the leading causes of tsunamis. Magnitude of 9.0 on the Moment magnitude scale. The Moment magnitude scale was succeed the 1930s-era Richter magnitude scale. It is to measure the size of earthquakes in terms of the energy released. The magnitude is based on the seismic moment of the earthquake. Occurred off the coast of Japan at 14:46 Japan Standard Time (05:46 Universal Time Coordinated) on 11 March 2011. Caused by the subduction of the Pacific Plate under the North American Plate. The epicentre was approximately 70 kilometres east of the Oshika Peninsula of Tōhoku. A peninsula which projects southeast into the Pacific Ocean from the coast of Miyagi Prefecture in northeast Honshu, the main island of Japan. Governmental bodies larger than cities, towns, and villages. Focus was at an underwater depth of approximately 30 km. Triggered powerful tsunami waves that reached heights of up to 40 metres in Miyako in Tōhoku's Iwate Prefecture. In the Sendai area, waves traveled up to height of 10 km inland. References:

Shortened Earth's day by 1.8 microseconds, according to NASA. Shifted Earth's axis by about 2.6 cm. Likely caused the Earth to spin a tiny bit faster, thus shortening the time the planet takes to rotate each day. Number of aftershocks: 9,577 (as of 10 March 2013) Problems faced after quake: Damaged buildings and infrastructure, most affected prefectures were Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima. Necessities were affected as Japan was dependent on its own country. Tsunami caused large developed areas into wastelands. Caused many people to be homeless. Earthquake and tsunami destroyed the Fukushima nuclear power plants. Health of the people living in Japan was concerned due to the radioactivity as there was an explosion of three nuclear reactors due to the tsunami. Telecommunication and communication lines were damaged. Exports plunged mainly because of supply shortfalls, but partly also due to concerns about products being contaminated by radioactivity. The number of visitors who went to Japan dropped drastically.
