How to Construct an Essay

The Perfect Five Paragraph Essay
Template and
The 6 Traits of Excellent Writing
For years, I've been trying to find the secret to writing
an absolutely perfect essay, every time. And now, I think
I've finally got it right! It starts with reading the prompt
carefully.
Here's a prompt:
Explain the best way
to write an essay.

Using words from the prompt, come up with a complete sentence to answer the question it asks.
Now, it's time to create a hook. By considering the audience,
you can come up with an interesting topic sentence that
will "hook" your readers, and make them want to learn more.
Analyze your answer to the prompt carefully.
Choose three strong reasons or arguments to support your belief.
Use The Perfect Five Paragraph Essay template to ensure
all essay elements are present
the organizational scheme is logical and orderly

Use the 6 Traits as a guideline to ensure quality writing
1.
2.
3.
4.
Finally, create a bridge to connect your hook with your thesis (answer to the prompt). This will ensure that your introduction progresses naturally and reads clearly. You may need to revise the wording of your thesis! Put the hook, bridge and thesis together, and you have completed your...
Introduction!
Hook
Bridge
Thesis
The introduction actually
contains everything that will
be in the essay.
The arguments you used to create your thesis become the topic sentences of your three main body paragraphs.
The thesis is used in the main body paragraphs to measure the quality and relevance of your main ideas. This is called the "Relation to Thesis" on the 5 Paragraph Essay template I gave you.
Topic sentences, in turn, are proved with SPECIFIC supporting details.
These are found in your resources (the text, reference books, ideas or other influences you used to come up with your arguments). You need at least two supporting details for each main body paragraph.
Sometimes, an idea doesn't really
need this step. The connection may
be obvious already. If you're not sure, though, write it out anyway--better safe than sorry!
At the end of each paragraph, you may need to relate each main idea back to your thesis.
Between main body paragraphs, you need
to make sure to transition gracefully. This can be done with sequencing words, phrases, or sentences.
Here is a web page that does a nice job explaining transitions. Parents, a little additional study might help here. (-:

The conclusion is very much like the introduction, but in reverse. The POTENTIAL of your ideas should be the focus.
First, you must restate and EXTEND your thesis. That means take your idea to the next logical step.
For example, if you said rising water levels
would pose a problem for ports over the next
century, then extend your point by suggesting
a possible solution.
Next, you review and EXTEND
your main ideas as well.
Follow the same line of thinking you
started when you extended your thesis.
Be consistent throughout the conclusion.
Finally, show the reader a reasonable
APPLICATION for the thesis and ideas
you've presented.
Like a hook, the application should encourage
the reader to pursue the topic further.
If possible, allude to your hook in your conclusion. You will create a sense of symmetry and completion if you remind the reader where the discussion began (in a new way).
The big picture:
A combination of good
ideas...
and a good organizational
scheme (i.e. The Perfect
Five Paragraph Essay
template)...
...is NOT enough by itself.
You still need to...

proofread,
edit,
and revise, using...
The 6 Traits
...really helps, but...
So, we'll look at how
these two tools can be
used together! Let's
start at the beginning.

Here's an essay, based on the prompt we began with, showing you what I expect to see.
Introduction
Thesis:
The best way to write an essay involves these three essential steps: reading the prompt carefully, using the Perfect Five Paragraph Essay template, and editing and proof-reading with a Six Traits rubric or checklist.
Hook:
Sometimes, writing an essay can be frustrating, nerve-
wracking and time-consuming.
Bridge:
But it doesn't have to be that way. There are tools at the disposal of writers that make the process systematic and easy; it is simply necessary to understand and use them in a logical way.

Main Body
Topic Sentences:
The first step is to read the prompt carefully.
The second step is to use the Perfect Five Paragraph
Essay template.
The third step is to use a Six Trait rubric or checklist,
to ensure that the writing you've done is clear,
expressive and compelling.
Supporting Details
Being sure to understand the prompt allows the writer
to feel confident that the question being asked will be
answered. In addition, referring to the question helps
the reader understand the arguments being made.
The template has included a variety of elements which
help the reader draw consistent, logical connections. It provides for this by creating a natural order, flow and
pace to the work, which shows that the author has command of the subject. Using this template intelligently guarantees an essay will score well in organization.
The Six Traits are designed to help a writer choose and develop the language that will best convey meaning. It is to language choices what the essay template is to ideas. There are instructions pertaining to voice, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions which are not addressed in the overall template of The Five Paragraph Essay. In addition, it allows an author to double check the quality and cohesion of the ideas being presented.
The prompt was, "Explain the best way to write an essay".
Relation to Thesis
An essay which does not directly address the prompt is
extremely risky, and will not produce the best results.

The Perfect Five Paragraph Essay Rubric is effective
enough to be used in high school and college, as well as
on the AIMS test.

The Six Traits is the criterion by which essays are graded
on standardized tests, so it is the best checklist you
can use.
Transitions
Please notice that either the end or the beginning
of the main body paragraphs has been altered to
accommodate the presence of the other main ideas.
Identify
Main Ideas
Being sure to understand the prompt allows the writer to feel confident that the question being asked will be answered. In addition, referring to the question helps the reader understand the arguments being made. An essay which does not directly address the prompt is extremely risky, and will not produce the best results. Then, the prewriting process can begin, and that's where a good organizational scheme really helps.
The first step in essay writing is to read the prompt carefully.

template. The template has included a variety of elements which
help the reader draw consistent, logical connections. It provides for this by creating a natural order, flow and pace to the work, which shows that the author has command of the subject. Using this template intelligently guarantees an essay will score well in organization. The Perfect Five Paragraph Essay Rubric is effective enough to be used in high school and college classrooms, and on the AIMS test as well. But again, this is not enough; it is still necessary to address important questions about sentence fluency, word choice and voice.
The third step is to use a Six Trait rubric or checklist, to
ensure that the writing you've done is clear, expressive and compelling. The Six Traits are designed to help a writer choose and develop the language that will best convey meaning. It is to language choices what the essay template is to ideas. In addition, it allows an author to double check the quality and cohesion of the ideas being presented. This is important because there are instructions pertaining to voice, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions which are not addressed in the overall template of The Five Paragraph Essay. And ultimately, the Six Traits is the criterion by which essays are graded on standardized tests, so it is the best checklist you can use.

Extend Your Thesis. Here's the original thesis
from the introduction:
The best way to write an essay involves three essential
steps: reading the prompt carefully, using the Perfect

reading with a Six Traits rubric or checklist.
Here's the extended thesis:
Once confidence and command of the elements of a
Perfect Five Paragraph Essay has been established, and the
the characteristics of Six Trait writing have been used to
analyze and improve the written product, a writer need no
longer be filled with fear and self-doubt when addressing
an essay prompt.
Now, review and extend your main ideas. They were:
1. read the prompt carefully,
2. use the 5 P. Essay template, and
3. use the 6 Trait proofreading and editing process).
Using the 6 Traits, the ideas and organization will be logical, the writing will have the correct tone and voice, and the overall presentation will be sharp. Most simply put, this means the audience will be able to understand the information they have been given.
Application
This process, ultimately, is a reflection of the way that the human mind works. As such, it can be applied in any meaningful inquiry.
