Models for Curriculum
Publisher Criteria Remove of about 33% of the performance expectations
Engineering Design Standards
'Storylines' with guiding questions were added to the beginning of each grade band and section to describe the content and rationale for the performance expectations.
The 'All Standards, All Students' appendix was expanded to include several vignettes about implementation of NGSS with diverse student groups.
Performance expectations names were changes from lowercase letters to numbers to avoid confusion with DCI names (MS-LS1-a became MS-LS1-1) Response to Feedback Become familiar with A Framework for K-12 Science Education (jigsaw)
Book Study: Ready, Set, Science!
Using current science curriculum, decide where practices can be implemented.
Begin having students engage in arguments from evidence (claim/evidence)
Put CCC in kid friendly language
Embed engineering into current curriculum Next Steps for Science SALT Standards articulate a clear vision of the learning goals for students
Standards articulate the student performance at the conclusion of instruction
Standards are NOT a description of curriculum
Standards do not dictate instruction NGSS Describes Achievement, Not Instruction Successful implementation of NGSS will require students to understand and apply DCIs, Science and Engineering Practices and CCC through the development of ideas across time.
NGSS will require viewing instruction and assessment as the 'bundling' of performance expectations into coherent lessons and assessment.
Unsuccessful implementation of NGSS will continue the use of the three dimensions as separate entities and lessons. Baking Tools and Techniques

(Crosscutting Concept) Conceptual Shifts in the NGSS 1. K-12 Science Education should reflect interconnected nature of Science as it is practiced and experienced in the real world.
2. The NGSS are student performance expectations - NOT curriculum.
3. The science concepts build coherently from K-12
4. The NGSS focus on deeper understanding of content as well as application of content
5. Science and Engineering are integrated in the NGSS K-12
6. NGSS content is focused on preparing students for college, career, and citizenship.
7. The NGSS and Common Core State Standards (ELA and Math) are aligned. Systems Cause & Effect Patterns Structure and Function Stability and change Scale, proportion,
and quantity Crosscutting Concepts (7) Energy and Matter Scientific and Engineering Practices Construct Explanations Gathering Information Communicate *Obtain information
*Plan and Carry Out

*Explanations Commonalities ELA S8: Obtain, evaluate, & communicate information
E3: Obtain, synthesize, and report findings clearly and effectively in response to task and purpose E6: Use technology & digital media strategically & capably
M5: Use appropriate tools strategically M4: Models with mathematics
S2: Develop and use models
S5: Use mathematics & computational thinking Science Math E1: Demonstrate independence in reading complex texts, and writing and speaking about them
E7: Come to understand other perspectives and cultures through reading, listening and collaborations S1: Ask questions and define problems

students should not just KNOW about Science....they need to be able to DO Science.
*Students need time to delve deeper
*Current State Science Standards - Inquiry vs. Standard
*Discussions now center around performance-based assessment and computer simulations.
*First reading of NGSS by ISBE - May 2013
*30 day review after input
*Earliest NGSS could be adopted by ISBE - November 2013
*Could be a 3 to 5 year implementation process
*NGSS = Less content
