Early years
training to be a photographer
Ralph was born in May 15, 1925. He died on May 7,1972.Ralph was born in Normal, Illinois, but he moved to kentucky after his divorce to his ex wife. Ralph died from cancer in 1972. He worked his entire adult life as an optician, making lenses for glasses.

Ralph got into photography because he worked for a company called, Tinder-Krausse-Tinder, a company that also sold photographic equipment.They had a camera club and that is how he got involved.
Ralph was in the camera club. He trained with Cranston Ritchie and Van Deren Coke, both members of the club, became important mentors and inspiring models in Meatyard’s work.

Equipment used
Ralph mainly took pictures in front of house and it was of his family member wearing strange mask. it was different outlook on the typical family photos

Ralph bought his first camera in 1950 to photograph his son michael. He would also take road trips and find old abandoned house and farms an let his children run free while taking photos
Inspiration
He was deeply connected with Zen Philosophy and heavily influenced by Jazz Music.
His paintings are soiled and hung in museums
