Transcript of Sexism in Of Mice and Men

SEXISM in Of Mice and Men Mykola Azarov, Prime Minister of Ukraine, said that
conducting reforms “is not a woman’s business.” First filed in 2001, the civil case against Wal-Mart potentially involved 1.6 million female workers, some of whom contend the nation’s largest retailer paid women less money and offered them fewer promotions.
A recent report from the Department of U.S. Labor showed that women today are paid only 72 cents for every dollar a man earns. The study found that at least one-third, or about 11 cents, of the pay gap is caused by pay discrimination against women, and this is 38 years after the Equal Pay Act became law
"Ever'body knowed you'd mess things up. You wasn't no good." - Candy
"She's gonna make a mess. They's gonna be a bad mess about her. She's a jailbait all set on the trigger. That Curley got his work cut out for him. Ranch with a bunch of guys on it ain't no place for a girl, specially like her." - George "I will tell ya what - Curley says he's keepin' that hand soft for his wife." - Candy QUOTES Sexist Events this quote said by Candy is a sexist remark for many reasons. He assumes that she would mess things up simply because she is a woman. Also, he says she is no good just because she is a woman living in a men only lifestyle. George calls Curley's wife a jailbait and says living on a ranch is no place for a girl. This is sexist because he believes that she can't live on ranch because that should be a place only for men. Also, he says she will cause problems just because she is the only woman there. A jailbait today and jailbait back then have two different meanings. Jailbait in Of Mice and Men's time period has a sexual connotation that is very sexist in the way George uses it Curley is trying to use her as a tool to prove how very manly he is. Nobody who respected his wife and felt secure in his relationship would need to spread talk like that around to the guys. Throughout the novel Curley's treatment of his wife and remarks towards women in general shows how very sexist he really is.
this remark stated by Mykola Azarov is very similar to many of the statements we hear from the ranchers refering to Curley's wife in OF Mice and Men. Throughout the novel they say how a farm is no place for a woman, and what the Prime Minister of Ukraine said was pretty much the government is no place for a woman either. Throughout the novel, the only jobs women seem to have are either cleaning the house or working in a cat house. During the time period the novel takes place in, women are not considered part of the workforce and men don't think they can take on the responsibility that comes with the work either. Therefore, if a woman is able to find herself a real job, she will not get paid as much as a man would because men don't think she is as capable as a guy or will last as long as a male worker might. Women not getting paid as much as me can be seen in both of these enents here, where women were discriminated against at Wal-Mart, and a study showed that overall, women don't make as much money as men even if its the same job.
