Transcript of Slender Loris
By: Marissa Baum Backround Information
- Slender Loris (Loris tardigradus) Genus: Loris
- There are grey and red slender lorises, slow lorises, and pygmy slow lorises.
-They are mammal, carnivore, and nocturnal
- They have huge eyes, ears and hands. They have a yellow-gray to dark brown fur with dark circles around the eyes resembling a raccoon. It has opposable big toes on each foot and are about the size of chipmunk.
-The species is aggressive and will become violent in groups if they are kept together so they live seperately
- They can reach to 15 years old
-Slow metabolism which allows them to digest things that may not be eaten by other animals (like the gum of trees). Endangered, why is it endangered? Completeing the Circle of Life - They like to eat the acacia ant whose bite can numb a human arm. -Endangered: threatened with a danger
-Endangered because the tribes in te rainforest believe that this animal has religious meaning and magical powers which when is killed, if you eat their bodies the power will come to you.

Loris Project [Web] Citations - hard to sport because of size and they are nocternal, no one is for certain how many are left; estimated 4,000 in wild. programs/organizations laws (region, global) -BBC (UK) News did a newcast on many "one of a kind" endangered species Slender Loris included which originally raised awareness internationally. -Thailand and Cambodia joined forced with The Thai Wildlife Crime Task Force which attended a seminar sponsored and co-organized by Care for the Wild to save the Loris. -PeunPa (which raises awareness about illegal animal smuggling and selling) have encouraged people to come forward about Slender Loris' being sold in Asian marketplaces. - Indian goverment recently has made laws that protect
the Slender Loris from being hunted, but natives continue to illegally hunt them. Lorises have been protected by law since 1973 in Indonesia.
-2007, Cambodian citizens were banned from international trafficking them
by ruling of the UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) CONSERVATION where does it live? -Live in the depths of the rainforests, far up in the trees.
-Specifically, Sri Lanka Southern India
Cambodia, Thailand and many parts of Asia. -Around 85 degrees oF with 70% humidity and moderate amount of rain percepitation during the fall and winter monthss but during summer there is barely any. -Surrounded by many species of mammal like leopards, bears and monkeys, hundreds of butterflies and snakes including deadly cobras and vipers and many species of birds. The most common plants are orchids. Information is based on the Sri Lanka, where the Slender Loris is mainly found. Information found at http://hackingfamily.com/Landfalls/Sri_Lanka/Sri_Lanka.htm (2000). Jon and Sue Hacking. Ecosystem Abiotic factors: Biotic factor: Definitions taken by http://www.biology-online.org/ ADAPTATIONS - Loris' are nocturnal animals and their large ears and eyes are adaptations to help them hear predators and navigate through the night to get food without awakening their prey.
-The thumb and big toe are able to grasp branches and twigs more easily so they can swimg from tree to tree to migrate when the humans try to catch them.
-Their limbs being formed only for climbing and clinging to branches, an adaptation to their living in trees which helps them stay off the ground, away from predators. Species Interactions Predation Parasitism Commensalism Mutualism Sri Lanka Leopard and the common deer Ticks that suck blood from the mammals that live on the ground of the moist forest
Flowers and plants providing food for the insect in the form of pollen and nector
-tapeworms in fish in the ponds/swamps of the forest spread to the tribes of humans that eat the fish from undercooking it without an oven causing them to die.
Slender Loris Predation: Parasitism Humans, when people pouch them for their body parts is the most common killer of this species. The Loris obviously does not benefit while the humans do. Fleas and ticks latch on to these animals high in the trees and suck on their blood which gives them a perk but the species a disadvantage competition intraspecific interspecific -form of competition in which members of the same species
fight for the same resource in an ecosystem -form of competition in which individuals of different species compete for the same resource in an ecosystem -Very tempertmental when it comes to interacting with own species so they fight over many things such as shelter, food and any other thing critical to survive. - the slow loris, althought similar, is a different species to the slender loris
which means they need many of the same basics to survive and it's a battle of the fittest to see who gets there first. -water: gives water suppliment so they dont dehydrate in the sun while sleeping
-sunlight: because they sleep during the day, the sunlight keeps them warm when it gets chilly
-weather and precipitation: The moist and rainy weather in the rainforest helps the species get
many insects and worms because they all get washed out of their shelters Animal Corner. (13 April 2011)
http://www.animalcorner.co.uk/rainforests/slenderloris.html Blue eyed lizard: Slender loris eats this to obtain protein worms: also provides nutrition, especially for the younger ones who aren't so skilled yet bird eggs: this is the easiest food to obtain because many of the birds sleep at night when the Loris is hunting for food. -Limiting factor: factor that controls a process, such as organism growth or species population, size, or distribution.
-The weather is the most limiting factor to the Loris because that is what helps them get most of their food which helps them survive. -Some limiting resources that are being fought over are, mates shelter in the tallest trees
(away from predators of the ground) and food like the lizards, leaves, bird eggs and worms - Usually found living alone or with a single mate. It is possible that limited polygyny is practiced (meaning one female: multiple male partners)
-Mating season is April to May and October to November. Females give birth twice per year and usually have 1 or 2 offsprings and they nurse their young for 6 to 7 months (Nowak, 1991). Kim. (1991)
http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/information/Loris_tardigradus.html -There is no attraction or courtship that happens between this species besides they have the human trait that they must get along because they are a very aggresive species -The Slender Loris needs to reproduce to have the species continue, which means they need to have proper nutrition and shelter to grow to the sexual maturity which is a cycle. Cycling carbon (Co2) in the rainforest to the Loris by breathing, because they are mammal they breathe in oxygen and carbon
Cycling Nitrogen gives the cycle of bacteria which breaks down the dead animals
Cycling Phosphorus also helps with bacteria and decomposing cycle
Cycling Sulfur helps with bacteria and decomposing as well by breaking down the organic matter Producers Orchid Bamboo Plants that get energy from the sun to produce food for animals like herbivores and primary consumers Primary Consumer SLENDER LORIS Fruit Bat Animals that eat producers and become food for the secondary consumers Secondary Consumers Eat the primary consumers, always knows as tertiary consumers (carnivores/omnivores) Chimpanzees Parrots Scavanger both a carnivor and herbivor which eats dead animals (scraps left behind) Earthworm Decomposer Gilled Fungi Moss SUN animal that breaks down dead plants and animals gives the producers energy The Loris is a Primary Consumer, their trophic niche is to eat plants and provide food for the secondary consumers The food web in a rainforest is very diverse because there are so many species of animals and plants. 1 1 1 BIOME essentially non-living components that effect the living organisms. created by a living thing or any living component
within an environment in which the action of the organism
affects the life of another organism. 2 2 Lat: Long: 7º00 N and 81º00E 2 Adaptations are ways that a species copes ith it's changing enviorment that helps them to survive 3 4 5 5 ONE-The Slender Loris The Slender Loris is an amazing animal. They live in the rainforest and have been endangered for more then 60 years. Note to Self: Must make sure new Biome resembles a rainforest with very tall trees *Note: "Self to notes" are what i am using to remind myself of what i must do to make a new improved biome TWO-Where does it live? The Loris lives in the rainforest, they need lots of precipitation in order to find insects *Note to self: should think about extending night hours so they can hunt more, need dense forest and weather must be very rainy FOUR- THE WEB *Note to self: Must make sure there are many bamboo plants to Loris to eat FIVE- COMPETITION The Loris does not have many Predators because they are nocturnal, there for the only competiton they have is the Slow Loris *Note to self: Don't have many Slow Loris In biome, also derease the tick population SIX- Circle of Life *Note to self: Make sure there are many slender loris os each gender
