Unexpected love
Checkouts by Cynthia Rylant

design by Dóri Sirály for Prezi
The Boys Personality
The boy's personality is that he is clumsy and nervous. The girl clearly states that the boy is clumsy and nervous because while she was walking out of the supermarket she thought to herself..." Strange, how attractive clumsiness can be. She left the supermarket with stars in her eyes, for she had loved the way his long nervous fingers moved from the conveyor belt to the bags, how deftly (until the mayonnaise) they had picked up her items and placed them into her bags."
Character's Motivation
" She had never told them how much she loved grocery shopping, only that she was "willing" to do it." The girl's motivation was that she didn't find the need of telling her parents everything about her."She had an intuition which told her that her parents were not safe for sharing such strong, important facts about herself."
Boy's Motivation
The motivation that the boy needs is if he sees the girl talking with another guy. Hopefully the boy will get jealous so then he will want to talk to the girl and then when hes brave enough he will ask her to go out with him.
Analysis
Part Of Each Others Life
The boy and girl are a part of each others life because the girl loves grocery shopping so she will do it whenever she it told to. The boy works at the grocery shop so whenever the girl goes to buy groceries the boy will always see the girl and the girl will always see the boy.
This is how the boy and girl felt after seeing each other for the second time and ignoring each other..." The girl hated herself for not checking out at the boy's line, and the boy hated himself for not catching her eye and saying hello, and they most sincerely hated each other without having ever exchanged even two minutes of conversation."
Definition of character Motivation:
The reason why the character acts in a particular way or does something.
Ex.
" The girl did not bring her cart up to the bag boy's checkout when her shopping was done." The girl's motivation for not checking out at the bag boy's line was because she was hoping for the boy to approach her.
"The girl hated herself for not checking out at the boy's line"
She hated herself because she was to nervous

" the boy hated himself for not catching her eye and saying hello"
He hated himself because he was to scared to approach her.

" They most sincerely hated each other without having ever exchanged even two minutes of conversation."
They hated themselves because neither had enough courage to talk to one another
Quote Analysis
"This is the way of children, when they truly want a thing, to pretend that they don't. And then they grow angry when no one tries harder to give them this thing they so casually rejected..."

Cynthia Rylant gave an example on how the boy and girl wanted to talk to each other but they acted like if they didn't. "The girl hated herself for not checking out at the boy's line, and the boy hated himself for not catching her eye and saying hello, and they most sincerely hated each other without having ever exchanged even two minutes of conversation"
" it is odd how we sometimes deny ourselves the very pleasure we have longed for and which is finally within our reach "

The boy and girl like each other and wanted to talk to one another but when they had the opportunity to talk they didn't." The girl hated herself for not checking out at the boy's line, and the boy hated himself for not catching her eye and saying hello, and they most sincerely hated each other without having ever exchanged even two minutes of conversation."
The Girls Personality
The girl's personality is that she is nice. The girls mom clearly states that the girl is nice because she said it herself... "You'll be lonely at first, they admitted, but your so nice you'll make friends fast."
" he believed that he must hae looked the fool in her eyes"
The boy thought that because he just embarrassed himself in front of the girl

" He never once turned his head in her direction but he watched her from the corner of his vision"
The girl thought that the boy didn't notice her walk in

" She gave up her fancy for the boy at the supermarket"
The reason the girl gave up on the boy was because she thought that he wasn't interested in her.

Actions
Thoughts
Feelings
"She spotted him as soon as she came into the store, but she kept her eyes strictly in front of her as she pulled out a cart and wheeled it towards the produce"
The reason the girl kept her eyes in front of her was because she didn't want the boy to notice her noticing him as she entered the supermarket.

"She looked at him and smiled and he could respond only by bursting her jar of mayonnaise on the floor"
The reason the boy burst her jar of mayonnaise was because he got distracted when the girl looked at him and smiled

" Some months later the bag boy and the girl with the orange bow again crossed paths standing in line with their dates at the movie theater, and, glancing towards the other, each smiled slightly, than looked away"
The reason that they didn't talk to each other was because they had their dates
