Unit 41: Profiling Sports Performance
The Role of Performance Profiling
Learning outcomes;

1 Understand the role and function of performance profiling in sport
2 Be able to determine the current sports performance of an individual
3 Be able to set targets for future sports performance of an individual
4 Be able to review the sports performance action plan.
Developing Awareness
Main role is to develop awareness of what aspects of their sport are integral to their sport.

They should prioritise which aspects of their performance should be ragarded as the most important

These can be presented in an easy to use format
Promoting Opportunities
The visual format of performance profiling allows the performers' strengths and weaknesses to be easily identified.

Opportunities to improve upon weaker areas can then be promoted.
Defining Goals
Although performance profiling is used as an alternative way of motivational goal setting, it can also completment the process.

Goals will be set to work on the weaknesses the individual percieves.
Building Relationships
Performance profiling is usually done in a collaborative manner

Between the athlete and coach or sports psychologist

This open and honest discussion can help the two parties to come to a greater understanding of each other.
Other Roles of Performance Profiling
Helping athletes to monitor changes in their performances and assess whether their training programme is achieving its desired outcomes.

Detecting any mismatch there may be between the individual and their trainer in terms of expectations and progress.

Helping the athlete to become actively involved in the process of assessing and evaluating their current performance levels and their future expectations.

To motivate them and to direct their efforts at the appropriate activities to improve their performance

It also helps to quantify the perceptions that the coach and athlete have about their level of performance

Training can be considered in a 'holitic' way because it incorporates physical, psychological, skill related and technical aspects

It can therefore be more effective than goal setting which tends to focus on two or three factors affecting performance
