Intro Video: What was the
Holocaust
? Take notes on facts in your Reader/Writer Journals. Discuss findings at end of video.
Book Distribution: Now copies of the novel
Night
will be distributed randomly. A bin will come around. Grab a book quickly.
Don't hesitate!
Open up the front cover of your book.

If you have a
red swastika
there, you're lucky. You're a Nazi and you don't have to fear for your life. Pat yourself on the back. Congratulations, brother! You've been dealt a good hand!
If you have a
yellow star
there, you're unlucky. You're a Jew and you have to fear for your life. I'm sorry. You haven't been dealt a good hand at all. Hang in there and if you're lucky, you might make it out alive.
Now we'll make a record of the Jews with the
yellow stars
. If you're a Jew, stand up and come to the side of the room next to the television. You'll get an arm band with a yellow star and a name tag with a number. We will no longer address you by your name. Your name and number will be written down on an official document and we'll take roll call every morning. If you aren't present every morning on time, you may be shot in the head by the SS police. Beware. Behave.
Here are the conditions for your
survival
:
1. You will be separated from the rest of the class in a makeshift classroom ghetto. You will be forced to work alone in isolation behind a curtain.
2. You will read on your own without the teacher's assistance. Don't interrupt the class too much, or you will face the consequences.
3. Be on time everyday for roll call, or you will perish.
4. Learn your number. You won't be addressed by your name from this point forward.
5. Turn in your arm band and number at the end of class every day. You will put it on at the start of class every day during roll call.
6. For your daily ration of food, you get a bowl of soup, a piece of bread, and a cup of contaminated water.
7. The SS police are watching your every move. Beware. Behave...
