The Cell Phone Citations Purpose To use current technology to indirectly contact others with a portable device By : Kayley and Willy Inventor Martin Cooper, a general manager at motorola at the time, is considered the inventor of the cell phone in 1973. The first words were to his rival Joel Engel, Bell Labs head of research. He said,"Joel, this is Marty. I’m calling you from a cellphone, a real, hand-held, portable cellphone." Innovations The cell phone has undergone many innovations since its invention in 1973, but the most noticeable innovations is it's size. The first cell phones size was 9 x 5 x 1.75 inches, and weighed approximately 2.5 pounds. It took 10 hours to recharge, and had a talk time of 35 minutes. How it was used Like today it was simply used by dialing a number. Impacts on Society Positives: Gives easy contact to friends and relatives. Small and easy to store. Negatives:Takes away attention from the road, their job, etc. STEM Chart (cc) image by nuonsolarteam on Flickr Science Technology Engineering Math Subject Cell Phone Discovery of microwaves reception to contact others Creating a device that uses microwaves to contact other similar devices Designing a device with a keypad , screen, and ability to use microwaves with others What are the optimal dimensions of the cell phone and everything inside. Quote "When I was young, the concept of being a dreamer was a very negative one. If you were a dreamer, you were useless. You didn't contribute anything to society. But Star Trek made dreaming legitimate, and I think that was a huge, huge contribution. ~ Martin Cooper "People want to talk to other people - not a house, or an office, or a car. Given a choice, people will demand the freedom to communicate wherever they are, unfettered by the infamous copper wire. It is that freedom we sought to vividly demonstrate in 1973." ~ Martin Cooper Fun Fact-Motorola introduced the 16-ounce "DynaTAC" phone into commercial service in 1983, with each phone costing the consumer $3,500.
