Louis Riel Louis Riel was born on October 22nd, 1844. He was the oldest of 11 children. Louis Riel had no early ambition to join politics, but was instead studying to be a priest at the college de Montréal. In 1864, Louis Riel
worked at a Montréal
law firm. When Canada purchased Rupert's land from
the HBC without consulting any of the territories Aboriginal inhabitants Louis Riel was chosen to lead the resistance against the annexation.
