#### Transcript of Roller Coasters: A History

Mauch Chunk's Switchback Railway
This roller coaster was created in America
the roller coaster was created on June 16,1884 in coney island Brooklyn, New York
POTENTIAL ENERGY
potential energy is the energy in matter due to its position or condition.
the things that effect PE are mass and height.
PE makes the roller coaster work by storing energy and as it travels down, it releases more kinetic energy.
PEgrav=m x g x h
KINETIC ENERGY
KINETIC ENERGY IN OUR ROLLER COASTER
when the marble would go up the loop, up the camel back, and up the hill is when it had most KE
this is because KE is energy being used, so it is using the energy to get up the hills.
POTENTIAL ENERGY ON OUR ROLLER COASTER
when the marble would go down the hill, camel back, and second part of the loop is when there was most PE.
this is because potential energy is stored energy so it is storing energy by using gravity.
The designer of the mauch chunk's switchback railway was La Marcas Thomson
Roller Coasters: A History
INVENTOR
kinetic energy is the energy of a moving object
the things that effect KE are mass and speed
Helps the roller coaster by gaining its kinetic energy as it goes downward on roller coaster and allows it to travel upwards better on the roller coaster.
KE= 1/2 mV (squared)
POTENTIAL ENERGY OF THE LOOP
PE = m x g x h
4g x 9.8grav x .32 m
PE = 0.0012544m/s squared
POTENTIAL ENERGY OF THE WHOLE ROLLER COASTER
PE = m x g x h
PE = 4g x 9.8grav x 5.44m
PE = 0.0213248m/s squared
KINETIC ENERGY OF THE WHOLE ROLLER COASTER
KE = 1/2 x m x v squared
KE = 1/2 x 4g x 4.8sec squared
KE = 0.04608 m/s squared
