The Ganga- Brahmaputra basin is made up of the plains of Ganga and Brahmaputra, foothills of the Himalayas and the Sundarbans delta. The area has monsoonal climate with hot summers and cool winters. The plains are most suitable for human occupation as they have fertile lands that are drained by rivers. The density of plains is very high and agriculture is the main occupation of people. Paddy, wheat, maize and sorghum are other major crops that are grown. Sugarcane and jute are prominent cash crops while silk is also cultivated. HI!

The basin comprises mountainous regions of the Himalayan ranges with dense forests, sparsely forested Shivalik hills and the fertile Gangetic plains. The Central highlands lying to the South of the Great plains consist of mountains, hills and plateaus intersected by valleys and river plains. They are largely covered by forests. The important soil types found in the basin are sand, loam, clay and their combinations such as sandy loam, silty clay etc. LOCATION
The tributaries of rivers ganga and brahamaputratogether form the ganga-brahamaputra basin.the basin lies in the sub-tropical region that is situated between 10 degree n to 30 degree n latidudes.
