In the story, the boys father was sugar cane driver who, was said to,"Behave as though people were slaves."When the labour unrest begins, his father and his family were in jepoardy due to the riots led by the people. Theme V.S. Naipaul is a second generation Indian born in Trinidad who became an award winning writer. His accomplishments include a Nobel Prize for Literature in 2001. He holds honorary doctorates from Cambridge University. His first three novels are comic portraits of Trinidadian Society where as his novels that followed were associated more with political themes. His first novel was published in 1957. V.S. Naipaul Historical Content The Enemy takes place in Cunupia, Trinidad during the Workers Revolt in 1934, due to the uneven distribution of wealth. The revolt was called the British West Indian Labor Unrest. The Unrest lead to the Sugar Cane Disturbance in Trinidad(1934), involving 15,000 Indian Estate Laborers. (1967) V.S. Naipaul Fun Fact: one of Naipaul award winning novels was written about his fathers upbringing in Trinidad (Naipaul was born in 1932) Authors Purpose The Authors Purpose of the story is to show that at some point in time you realize that you do need parental guidence, even if it seems that they show no empathy, they will always care. The story is also representative of a possible power struggle that occurs amongst the characters Historical fiction novel by setting and or novel by period.
