What is it all about?
Blended Learning & e-tivities
* Topics:
* Context: Blended Learning
* Context: Learning Design
* E-tivities

Blended Learning
e-tivities and learning design .
What is Blended LEarning?

E-tivities and learning design
> e-tivities on their own offer a short cut into creating blended learning designs as they are...

> geared to engaging learners in active online learning and employ well-
rehearsed & researched principles for learning

> a way to move from designing Information to designing Experiences

* e-tivities on their own offer a short cut into creating blended learning designs and making learners active

* e-tivities are well-supported by the research literature and embed a number of learning theories

* A good way of getting e-tivities designed and deployed for learning and teaching is to use a team-based learning design process such as Carpe Diem.

> can be used as a framework for constructing online/blended learning

E-tivity Model

Research shows (Dahlstrom, 2013):
* majority of students prefer blended learning
* learn most in blended learning environments

BL can and does
* Improve student engagement and motivation
* allow for better use of teachers and resources
* enhance student experience & satisfaction
(Dziuban, 2004-2011)

TASK...

What is an E-tivity?

>
Are powerful but simple online learning tasks

>
involves learners interacting with one another and with the course tutor in an online communication environment (e.g forum/chat room) in order to complete a particular task.

> can be used as a framework for constructing online/blended learning

IF you have completed
E-tivity2?

USe the 'Reality checker's form' to evaluate another group's E-tivity

E-tivity sample
What do I do?
Key Features:
* take place over time (asynchronous)
* easily linked with assessment
* cheap & easy to run
* simple to modify and scale
> use basic technology such as forums, wikis,blogs
Blended courses combine the best
pedagogical practices of two teaching methods
—online and face-to-face instruction.

Its one way to meet the changing needs of students,
industry and institute

* A good way of getting e-tivities designed and deployed for learning and teaching is to use a team-based learning design process such as Carpe Diem.

The possibilities of BL
Creating E-tivities
The good e-tivity criteria [workbook P12]

• Unambiguous (not open to interpretation)
• Short
• Can be grasped at the first reading
• Offers obvious benefit to the participant
• Contributes visibly to the learning
objective [and, or assessment]
• E-moderator’s role is clear
• Timed

Key E-tivity components
1. Title of E-tivity
• Plus a Small piece of info, stimulus or
challenge (the ‘spark’)
2. Purpose of the e-tivity
