Transcript of Mission Statements
What is a mission statement, and why do I need one?
Start off with a sentence about yourself: include something on your education and your career goals.
Explain some of the important skills you have picked up in your career up to this point. Try to give examples of where you picked up these skills.
Make sure that the skills that you mention are the ones that the employer is looking for (HINT: look at the job advertisement)!
keep it short, be concise!
Have a consistent ‘voice’. Decide whether to write about yourself in the first or third person, and stick to it.
Tailor your statement.
What do I include in my mission statement?
the mission statement is like an ultra mini-cover letter that summarizes who you are, where you are going and what you can do for the specific company.
A successful resume today replaces the "this is what I want" objective statement with a "this is the value that I offer" branding statement
Creating your brand
Mission statements are mostly used for jobs in the private sector. Academic CVs rarely include a mission statement.
Instead, CV’s often include a Summary of Qualifications.
Tips for writing mission statements:
Avoid overused clichés such as ‘good team player’.
So, how do I get started?
1. Take an Inventory
what are your values?
how are you unique?
2. List your priorities
where do you want to direct your time, resources and energy?
focus on your short-term career goals.
