What are GEARS ????
Gears have many different types of purposes like powering a bicycle. A moving gear moves another gear which transmits power. A gear is a simple machine that makes work easier. Gears are used in motors and more complexed machines such as :
- clocks
- cars
- can openers (etc.)

A gear is a simple machine. There are many different types of gears. You need a follower and a leader gear to form a gear train. You can also use an eidler gear. When one gear moves the other gears move as well. A gear is a rotating machine.

There are many different types of gears that work in different ways such as :
- rack and pinion gears
- spur gears/helical gears
- worm gears
- bevel gears
- face gears

HOW DO GEARS WORK???
A gear works by transmitting power to another gear. For example when you push a gear stick in a car which moves the leader gear which then moves the follower gear. Once one gear moves the other gears move with it because they are attached by teeth. They are not real teeth, just spurs that are attached.

WHY IS A GEAR A SIMPLE MACHINE ???
A gear is a simple machine because it is used in more complex machines. They make things easier to use. For example, can openers use gears to help open a can.

BIKE GEARS:
Bike gears are a bit different than regular gears. They have sprockets. Sprockets
are gears that have a chain around it.
The teeth are designed to fit through
the empty parts of a chain to operate
something like a bike. When you pedal,
that moves the chain and that causes
movement to the gears. The gears
move because the chain is attached to
to the gears.

You change gears to get faster
or slower on a bike.

MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE:

When two gears of unequal numbers of teeth are combined, a mechanical advantage is produced. That changes the rotational speed of the smaller gear. The smaller gear moves faster because it has less teeth. That makes what the gears are supposed to do faster.

As you already know a gear is a simple
machine. There has to be a follower gear
and a leader gear to form a gear train.
Gears are used in many different machines.
Gears are amazing machines and help in
many different ways.
