Transcript of Viva la Vida
Matthew 16:18-19 - "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." Exodus 14:21 - "And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided." Matthew 14:8-11 - "And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger. And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her. And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother." Viva la Vida - Coldplay Direct biblical references are found in:
Exodus Matthew 27:37 - "THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS" Verse 1: "Seas would rise when I gave the word" Verse 5: "Revolutionaries wait for my head on silver plate"
Final Chorus: "I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world" Verse 5: "Oh who would ever want to be King?" Verse 3: "And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand" Matthew 7:24-27 - "Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And ever one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it" "Viva la Vida" has inspired a lot of debate as to its true meaning.
Some believe that it refers to the French Revolution and Louis the XVI, Napoleon Bonaparte or more modern political leaders like Saddam Hussein and/or George W. Bush.
Others believe that the song is a literal interpretation of the life of Jesus; if this is the case, the lyrics paint Jesus more as a revolutionary (a characteristic that most don't normally attribute to him, although he definitely deserves)! Jesus turned the entire social, religious and political order upside down.
Most agree that the song generally refers to kings/leaders and revolutions, which can apply to a host of people and periods throughout history.
Coldplay's bass guitarist, Guy Berryman says, "It's a story about a King who's lost his kingdom...There's this slightly anti-authoritarian viewpoint that's crept into the lyrics..."
Additionally, the album cover artwork is a painting by Eugène Delacroix entitled, "Liberty Leading the People." Matthew 26:69-75 - Peter denies Jesus on three occasions. Modern Meaning Chorus: "Be my mirror, my sword, my sheild
My missionaries in a foreign field" Matthew 28:19-20 - "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world." Matthew 27:29 - "And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, Saying, Hail, King of the Jews!" Carvaggio's "Salome with the Head of John the Baptist" Diego Velazquez' "Crucifixion, 1632" (Album Cover) © UNIVERSAL MUSIC - MGB SONGS Verse 2: "One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me"
