Johnny Reb and Billy Yank
Volunteers expected all glory and adventure. Both the South and the North thought the war would end quickly once they started to fight.
Volunteers expected all glory and adventure. Both the South and the North thought the war would end quickly once they started to fight.
The North called the southern troops Rebels hence Johnny Reb. The South called the North Yankees hence Billy Yank.
The lowest age allowed to fight was 18. Many who were 16 or 17 wanted to fight so they joined. Most Southern troops had used guns all their life for hunting. Northern troops had not.
Many quickly learned the life of a soldier was hard. Marching in the worst kind of weather without enough food or water while having to carry fifty pounds of equipment. Some soldiers were reported half starved, half frozen, and sometimes even half drowned.
Eventually each side turned to the draft. This angered many people. One of the reasons for that is the American government had never drafted before. Not in the Mexican War, the War of 1812, or the War for Independence. Paying the bonus gave them enough men for the time being. In the North, Irish and German immigrants thought that when the war was over, they would use the money to buy a farm. So about 1/5 of the Union army are immigrants.
The draft laws seemed unfair to every one. In the North and the South, a drafted person could get out of serving by paying for a substitute. Another way is to pay to the Union. Some people in the South who owned 20 or more slaves could get out too. Most men thought of this as a rich man's war and a poor man's fight.
Reading about the war makes it seem like the troops were busy all the time. In fact, The battles gave the troops little time to rest. They lasted about a few days. Some soldiers kept time repairing equipment and camp. Meals were also boring.
Billy Yank was better supplied than Johnny Reb. Billy Yank also had a uniform and Johnny Reb sometimes didn't. Here are two types of uniforms for the Union
Women made good nurses for the soliders and they took over factories and businesses.
African American soliders get less pay and poor equpiment but they led raids and were spies for the Union behind enimy lines
This is hardtack a food they ate in the Union, they also drank coffee (left,up) and bacon (right,up)
Abe Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1,1863.
This is a 17 year old boy in the Civil War.
