8th Grade Poetry Devices Unit
Mrs. Uptmor Personification allows
a poet to give human
characteristics to non-humans
such as animals or even inanimate
objects Metaphors are vehicles of description.
Poets use these to familiarize the reader
with somethingthey may have not completely
understand otherwise. An Example of this is,
"Life is a highway." Alliteration creates flow and mood
by employing the repetition of
begining consonant sounds
throughout the piece. Imagery allows
a poet to appeal
to their readers'
senses Poetic Devices bring interest
and personality to a piece. A similie is
a comparison
of two unlike
things which
uses the words
"like" or "as" The Lesson: Work your way through
the Following Lessons. You Tube Video Activities: Watch the following videos,
and discuss their prompts that
accompany them. Explain how each song is an example of it's respective Poetic Device. This poem is an extended metaphor. What, beyond
two roads diverging in a wood, is this poem describing? Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Poem
"The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere"
is an example of narrative poetry.
Describe the Exposition, Rising Action,
Climax, and Falling Action, of this poem.
