SKELETAL MUSCLE
The skeletal system is made up of
bones
and
cartilage
which form the framework of the body.
All people have a stiff inner skeleton made of bone and hard, yet flexible tissue called
cartilage
.
The skeletal bones have 4 main jobs:
to support the body and to give it shape
to protect internal organs
to provide scaffolding for muscles to allow movement
to store minerals and make blood cells
Cardiac muscle is
involuntary muscle

Cardiac muscle is
ONLY FOUND IN
the
HEART
Cardiac muscle keeps your heart pumping all day and all night
JOINTS - parts of the body where 2 or more bones meet
EXAMPLES: knees, elbows, hips, neck, wrists, ankles, toes, fingers, shoulders, vertebrae
***Some joints, like joints of the skull, do not allow movement

LIGAMENTS - parts of the body that hold joints together

Smooth muscle
is
involuntary muscle
, which means it is not under your control
Smooth muscle is found within the walls of many bodily organs
When your stomach growls because you are hungry it is due to contractions of smooth muscle in your stomach
Skeletal muscle contracts to move bones
TENDONS
are tough cords of connective tissue that attach skeletal muscles to bones
Skeletal muscles are
voluntary muscles
because they are controlled by nerves which tell them when to contract or relax
Skeletal muscles
work in pairs
EXAMPLE: Biceps/Triceps
Life Science
The skeletal and muscular systems work together to help you move.
