Effects of Littering on our Environment

Affects on the quality of life
Garbage that is not properly disposed of is harmful to wildlife and water resources
Litter can leak toxins and chemicals into our environment through the water system
Garbage clutters and deteriorate the natural beauty of our environment when people do not properly dispose of their wastes
We have to figure out current garbage issues so that future generations do not have to worry about the deteriorating state of our environment
Litter effects community health and relations
Laws Of Litter
ALL 50 states have littering laws or penalties in place.
However, some states laws are more extensive than others.
Kentucky Laws: Ky. Rev. Stat. §512.070
Littering is classified as a Class A misdemeanor
You can receive a fine up to $500 or up to one year in jail.
Sometimes as a punishment for other crimes people are forced to do community service that involves picking up trash.
Social Impact

Why Do People Litter?
People think that some items are not litter like cigarettes.
Most people are not willing to look for a trash can.
Lack of social pressure to do the right thing.
Laziness, the garbage can is "too far" away
The area is already messy, why bother finding a trash can?
People don’t realize that with littering, there do come consequences

Solutions for improving the quality of life
Some solutions that have worked in anti-litter campaigns worldwide to improve the quality of life:
Having more waste, recycling, and compost disposal bins available in the public. (Reconstituting social life)
More advertising to educate the public
Petitions signing for urban areas to decrease their environmental impact.
More (intense) littering fines.
Community involvement.
Conclusion
A small act like littering can have larger economic and social impacts on many aspects of our environment and our lives. By promoting cultural change and using sociological knowledge we have the ability to improve the quality of life and the world around us. In order to have successful, healthy, strong communities we need to implement change therefore, allowing future generations to thrive.

We will discuss how this problem affects our quality of life, why people litter, laws of litter and solutions.
