I Can't take it anymore The moonshot Scandal began the time called the "Space Race". The U.S. and Soviet Russia were both trying to beat each other in a race to space. Russia got a man into space first, with a satellite called "Sputnik". But the U.S. was the first to land people on the moon. The moon shot scandal is that people do not think that people landed on the moon...it was all a government conspiricy; that the government was just trying to show up Russia. Moonshot Nizar Ali Virani WoodStock Woodstock was a four-day concert. It was an art and Music Festival in 1969. It became an icon of the 1960s hippie counterculture. The concert was supposed to be free, but the organizaers realized they could make a bunch of money. THey charged 15 dollars per ticket ($75 now)[75X200,000=15,000,000]. The 4 organizers had to deal with their incredible debt, because 70 lawsuits that had been filed against them. Watergate The Watergate Scandal was political scandal surrounding President Nixon. Watergate refers to the Watergate Hotel. The scandal is about illegal activities surrounding the president. Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974. Punk Rock Punk Rock was originally used to describe the garage musicians of the '60's. The first "concrete" punk rock "concert" was seen in the mid '70s in New York. In the late '70s, punk rock emerged as a rooted musical attribute. People began to create their own individual "concerts" with specific sounds...what we know as Punk Rock. Menachem Begin He became 6th prime minister of Isreal in May 1977. He recieved Nobel Peace Prize for the Camp David Accords. They defined the future relations between Isreal and Egypt. In 1979, Begin signed the Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty with Anwar Al-Sadat. Under the terms of the treaty, Israel handed over the Sinai peninsula to Egypt Ronald Reagan Reagan was a TV actor, who supported the conservative Republican party . In 1966 he was elected governor of California. He tryed to run for president in 1968, but failed. He tryed to run again in 1976. but failed. He was
elected President in 1980 and 1984. After 69 days of his presidency, he was shot when leaving the Hiliton Hotel in Washington D.C. Palestine Palestine was formally known as Isreal. The Arabs tried taking it back; started the Suez-Sinai War. The Arabs were defeated and Israelis started the 6-day war. America placed troops in Israel. Arabs raised oil prices to retaliate. Terror on the Airlines This was big during the 1970's and 1980's. July 17, 1976 - first hijack, Air France Flight 139 carrying 238 passengers and 12 crew members. 2 Palestinians hijacked and demanded release of 40 Palestinians. starting 1985, Libya and US had many airplane attacks; then became global. Ayatollah's in Iran Between 1979 and 1989, Iran was transformed from a monarchy ruled by Shahs to a dictator, and Ayatollah was ruler. He was viewed as a holy man; he sought “purification” of Iran. He killed many people of religious minority. He worked towards a totally Islamic Iran, but he was very racist, sexist and a bit communist. Russians in Afghanistan Conflict waged for 9 years, from December 27, 1979, to February 15, 1989. No definite battlefield, fighting was all over the place;c in mountains, plains, etc. Soviets lost above 15’000, the Afghans lost 2 million civilians. Soviet Union was attempting to instill Communism in Afghanistan Wheel of Fortune It was first debuted on NBC on January 6th 1975. To spice things up NBC added the comedian David. The show escaped the axe which other shows suffered from in 1980 such as [Hollywood Squares, High Rollers, and Chain Reaction]. It continues to be a classic, a show for all ages. The hosts have changed;the show is now hosted by Vanna Brown and Par Sajak. Sally Ride Sally Kirsten Ride was the first American woman to fly in space. She travelled in the space shuttle Challenger in 1983 and in 1984. After the Challenger exploded during a 1986 launch, Ride served on the presidential commission investigating the accident. She finally retired from the astronaut corps in 1987. She later became a physics professor at the UCSD and president of the Internet site Space.com. Heavy Metal Heavy metal music started rising in the sixties and seventies...it was huge in America. Originating blues-rock and psychedelic rock, heavy metal added a thick and powerful sound which was distorted with an amp. Heavy metal is known by its long guitar solos, emphatic beats, and extreme volume. Because of its popularity and commercial aspects, metal was able to send messages to the mind of the youth throughout the Cold War. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Twisted Sister were HUGE in the age of the "metal". Suicide James Warren Jones founded the “doomsday cult” of Christian denomination was in California. I was originaly made for the sick and homeless, but spread to become one of the first interacial congregations. After a while,
reports of pretend suicides and possible forced membership prompted Congressman Leo Ryan to visit and inspect the temple. Some members decided to leave the temple at this time, but as they attempted to, armed temple gaurds arrived at the airstrip and killed Ryan, three members of the press, and one who wanted to leave Jonestown. Afraid of consequences, 914 members drank grape juice laced with cyanide and sedatives and died.Others escaped to the jungle. Foreign Debts Most observers believe the "petrodollar recycling" of the 1970s gave rise to the debt crisis. During that period, the price of oil rose dramatically. Oil-exporting countries in the Middle East deposited billions ofdollars in profits they received from the price hike in U.S. and European banks. Commercial banks were eager to make profitable loans to governments and state-owned entities (as well as private companies) in developing countries, using the dollars flowing from the Middle Eastern countries. Developing countries, particularly in Latin America, were also eager to borrow relatively cheap money from the banks. Homeless Vets In July 1987, the Homeless Veteran’s Reintegration Program was authorized. The U.S. Department of labor attempted to resolve the growing problem of veterans of war living less than fortunate lifestyles as a result of spending time serving their country. To provide services to assist in reintegrating homeless veterans into meaningful employment within the labor force and to stimulate the development of effective service delivery systems that will address the complex problems facing homeless veterans. It gives veterans the employment and training they need to re-enter the labor force. Job placement, training, job development, career counseling, and resume preparation, are among the provided services. AIDS AIDS was transffered from primates (monkeys) to humans during 20th century
The AIDS era officially started in July 1981. It became a global pandemic in 2002.There were low infection rates in Western Countries because of safe sex practices, and tehre were high infection rates in 3rd world countries because of poor economic conditions and poor education Crack Crack began avaliable in the United States. It was more potent, and considerably less expensive than powder cocaine, so its use spread rapidly. Crack cocaine has been more popular among poor, young, inner-city African-Americans, while powdered cocaine tends to be used by affluent social groups. The US government's harder line against crack users has been criticised as racist. This whole issue began with hippies. Bernie Goetz When a new yorkerook the unprecedented step of shooting four muggers, the city's authorities reacted by screaming for everyone to keep calm and pouring 1,300 extra police into the streets. By the time Bernhard Hugo Goetz turned himself in nine days late, he was a popular hero. It transpired that he had been mugged once before, had applied for a pistol permit, had been refused; so he bought a gun in Florida, and when the four toughs "asked" him for $5--an unusually large sum to "ask" of a total and outnumbered stranger in a subway--Goetz replied, "I have $5 for each of you," and opened fire. During 1987 and 1988, a large amount medical waste and garbage washed up onto a 50 mile stretch of the New Jersey shoreline. The local tourism industry suffered a loss of more than one billion dollars in revenue in that one summer. The New Jersey Harbor Estuary Program (HEP) founded the Short-Term Floatable Action Plan in response to the waste. The plan established an effective four step process to prevent future waste from collecting on the New Jersey shores, and resulted in the reopening of many beaches to the tourists. The origin of the waste was eventually determined to be the Fresh Kills Landfill of Staten Island, New York. Hypodermics on the Shore China's Under MArtial Law On June 4, 1989, at Tiananmen Square, the Chinese army enforced this law and proceeded to massacre many democratic protesters. In late 1985 through late 1986, students protested in Beijing and Shanghai. Since 1978, Deng Xiaoping, leader of the Communist Party of China, led a series of economic and political reforms, implementing a market economy and relaxing the strict system set up by Mao Zedong. However students and other reformists believed China had to further reform its political policies. Rock and Roller Cola Wars The Cola Wars was a series of advertising campaigns which was initiated by the “Pepsi Challenge”. The advertisement was to prove that Pepsi was preferred over Coke. Pepsi had the idea to approach this task by involving the public which is smart because the public is the audience and the main reason the people at Pepsico go to work in the morning. The method that Pepsi used is similar to that of Nehi used in the 1930’s. THE END
